Hi,

Sorry for my English but I need your help because freezing on the boat in france!!
So I have an old eberspacher d5l from 1991, which was working properly until recently. Now it starts blowing and heating just for 3 minutes and then stops. I can hear the relay clicking and then stopping with fan variations. So I decided to clean the fuel pump but was clean. After I unpluged everything including main unit and command. It worked well after for 5 hours. The day after I starte it again but this time again it stopped a few minutes after. Any idea????
Thanks

Not knowledgeable about those things but thought I would bump this.
Is there a sensor that checks for a flame and switches it off if it doesn't see one? Had a boiler once that had an optical sensor needed cleaning regularly or it would start and stop.

Had similar symptoms last year with our D2. It fired up, came up to speed and then slowly died off after a few minutes. I checked the filter and that was ok so it had a full service kit fitted and has been fine since. Usually the heat gauze soots up and the unit flames out

Yes battery is ok, full charge. So yes maybe this is a problem of soot. I have to see how to maintain that myself because it looks quite difficult to find somebody able to help around Paris. Is there any maintenance kit for those old heaters? or just clean "by hand"?

Thanks
Gwen

Try running it on Parafin/Kerosene and if it runs leave it running on it for a few hours. It's supposed to remove all the carbon build up.

Have a read of the document in the link

Here's the before and after picture of using Kerosene

Try running eber with engine on. If it runs ok you'll definitely know for sure if it's the battery or not. I think the eber needs 13 volts to fire and continue for a period?
Thought our battery was fine and showing charged but the eber was putting a big strain on the old thing.

Thanks
Gwen

Thanks for this detailed explanation! I will try that once I find some kerozene?!! Do you think I really need to change the "glow pin" or it should be ok like how it is now?

That's not carbon build up it's just loose soot from running over rich and cycling, you could get the same result, or better still prevented it in the first place by setting the burn rate correctly.

Personally, I'd give the Kerosesne a try and if it works do the rest at your leisure as general maintenance. I have a D4 and it's very easy to take apart and service. The only "special" tool required is a socket to take the glow pin out as it has a slit down the side to allow the cable to come out. You can easily make your own socket if you have an angle grinder to make a slot in your own socket.

Surely if it was just loose soot in the first pic it would have been ejected out of the exhaust?

I have been looking throw the exhaust and the glow pin hole, and it seems that there is a little bit of soot, so I will run it with kerozene for a couple of hours and then I hope it will work again. I will do that for the we.
Thanks for all your support:)

after using kerosene, the heater stopped suddenly after 3 hours running and now completely impossible to start it again... I think I need to buy a new one, especially now that it's getting cold.

F12 - Overheating at the overheating sensor:

Temperature of the overheating sensor is too high.
1. Check hot air pipes for blockage - remove blockage
2. Sum of the component ratings of air-conducting parts is to large - Check air system, if necessary re-lay
3. Check overheating sensor - at 20 C it should have a value between about 57 and 65 ohms.

ok just some news from my eber D5.

I removed it from the hold and unscrewed the hood.
I cleaned it because it was full of dust, and I also "shaked" it because it was like full of small stones of ashes, so turn it one sense and one another to make it exit by the exhause. Quite an little pile of dust/ash went out. After I put it back in place and I runned it.
- good news it started again.
- it started with some wet smoke and sometimes projecting littles pieces outside with some of them burning
- it worked full regime for the whole night so I moved from 7°C to 25°C.

So next step is to see if it will work again this night!! News coming soon.

Some fresh news. Eber d5 never started again. Even after i unpluged it twice. Do you know how I can see error codes on this stuff? Thanks
