Have to get the ferry, from Portsmouth, tonight to pick up a boat in France.

Any suggestions for a reasonable meal around Portsmouth Harbour Station - have no experience of the place, just that's where the train stops and I have agreed to meet the motley

The Lady Hamilton. Why not use a proper establishment instead of hideous Gunwharf shopping centre which needs nuking? All in my most humble opinion Sir.

'Tis a fair distance from the Harbour Station/Gunwharf to the Ferry Port so timing for noshing may be critical. There is a Burger King in Gunwharf!

Very true about the distance, there used to be a city circular bus that went round in circles from the ferry terminal, 50p a ride, perhaps the OP might take advantage if he goggles it.

Depends on how much time you have.
Taxis are quite cheap, loads of good curry houses in Southsea.

Gunwharf is OK for a change.
Or pubs on the hard, then eat on the ferry?

The ' Midnight Tandoori ' in Southsea always used to be good, but haven't been for years. For dependably medium quality there's a Harvester on the Eastern Road beside Langstone Harbour, which will be a taxi job.

As this is on the PBO how about a cold FB pie warmed over an inverted terra cotta flower pot

Setting up camp in the bus station might attract attention, and we'd need to find Carling SB or industrial quantities of White Lightning.

Is it distance lending enchantment or are they not as good as they used to be? Bit like Mars bars getting smaller all the time.

In fact wouldn't it be better to get off at Portsmouth and Southsea (stop before the harbour) for the channel ferries????

Thanks for that, crew say they are assembling there. Seems a good idea to go there too. The wonders of local knowledge.
Only been there once, to collect a boat, and today will be the second time, seems enough for one lifetime.

I think P&S is a little closer, but there's better eating to be had round the Harbour Station so they are clearly clued up... despite the statements above, I like Gunwharf and there's lots of choice in there... I particularly like the all you can eat Chinese buffet place (the Water Margin) food is well cooked and tasty..... other than that there's Nando's/Loch Fyne/Jamie Olivers/Old Custom House.. (and yes, as Giblets mentions, a Burger King... :D )

Either station is a long walk to continental ferry port with a kitbag, IMHO.
Taxi about £5 from either station?

I would not go to Gunwharf for fine dining, but there's just about all the chain restaurants that you can think of, just Google "Gunwharf Restaurants" and you will get the list. My personal favourite is Wagama, but that might not be yours.

Take the ferry to Gosport which leaves from the pontoon by the station. Hang a left from the ferry & walk along the sea wall. In 5 mins you'll see Hardy's by the marina entrance. Great food & not a chain.

Just, if visiting Gosport anywhere around closing time, have a broadsword and Kalashnikov handy; come to that, Dad and I were shot at with a high powered rifle in Old Porstmouth, true story; it takes a lot to get Dad - experienced in WWII with Kamikaze's - to leg it, but he and I did on that occasion ! :)
