Easyjet and life jackets

Took a yacht to the south of Spain and flew back from Alicante.
Declared my life jacket at the airport and there was some confusion about carrying it with a potential 'no' in the offing.
I happened to have the information below printed out and offered this to the receptionist. She was so relieved to have a quotable ruling that, with my permission, she took it away to photocopy for future use.


International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations

"Goods acceptable with operators approval as baggage -

Non-flammable gas cylinders fitted into a life jacket

Not more than two small cylinders per person, containing carbon dioxide or other suitable gas in Division 2.2 , fitted into a self inflating life jacket for inflation purposes plus not more than two spare cartridges "

Well, nothing causes more troubles than lifejackets on aircrafts. On a recent sailing trip to the UK (from Germany) with Lufthansa check-in in Frankfurt was difficult, but possible in the end.
On the return flight from two of the crew (all had themin their bags) had to go to the oversize-luggage check-in due to the size of the bag - and where denied carrying the gas cylinders. The security knew the IATA rules and handed the issue over to the airline - in this cas Aviance, the local agent. They denied that it was possible to carry them and even threatened me... Finally on board the aircraft, the captain said "Of course we carry them, but now it is to late". I am still waiting for a reply to my complaint. So beware when flying from Birmingham!

We're always going to be at the mercy of a check-in clerk who only knows what they need to know for the job.

Friday we fly to Corfu and I have two new Hammar Crewsavers to take out there. We usually fly with Thompson in the summer so I took the precaution of asking their customer services dept. what their policy was. I was told that it is as per the 45th edition as you quote.

I have a note of the individual's name and the date & time of the call but I will not be totally confident until I'm on the plane with my property intact especially as a pilot friend tells me that we are now on edition 47!

Hi guys

I work for a airline and can tell you it is completely allowed to carry a life jacket in the hold with one spare cylinder. That includes easyJet.Think you have a case here of someone not knowing there job properly and going for the easy option IMHO.

Carried on to the BA flight to Greece earlier this year. No fuss, no photocopying, no oversized baggage, no running around, just a polite 'of course' and straight onto the aircraft.

And the ticket was the same price as SleazyJet, RyanBare et al. Come on people, stop flying with budget airlines...
