Easy Start

very good point

Not really....Just think about it!!!! Maybe possible on a two stroke diesel but the 4 stroke engine will purge on the exhaust and suction strokes that follow.

I can assure you that on engines such as the Volvo MD 2 and MD 6 7 and 11 there is a distinct possibility of stretching head studs which allows carbon to get where it shouldn' t and then gas leakage occurs..

The Ton- and Hunt class minesweepers use Coffman-type starters to get their Deltics going. 18 litres IIRC.

I didn't know they were cordite powered though.

Koffman starters are not as aggressive as some think. Yes they use a cartridge just like a big shot gun however they don't bang off at random as the engine would never start also there is no bullet trapping the charge into a small space in order to generate very high pressures. The starter cartridges are timed to explode after TDC and fire into a cylinder of relatively large volume through a controlling oriface. Certainly not the same conditions as igniting a charge of easystart at 20+ degrees BTDC.

For anyone with an engine that is reluctant to start and doesn't want to use Easy Start, they can fit a Thermostart ( as used on Perkins 4108 etc.)into the inlet or air filter case (assuming it's not a paper element) and that will usually do the trick. I fitted one on a BMC 1.5 which had broken cold start plugs and it was fine for several years until I got round to taking off the head to replace the plugs.

EasyStart is a complete waste of time. If you must use such starting aids, get this Australian one :D:D

Ask Ford motor company about easystart and their early diesels in the Transit and especially the failed (thanks to starting problems/easystart) "A" series
Are you suggesting, after all that has been said, that Easy Start can cause damage to diesel engines?

These thing keep coming round again don't they.

My late brother had an old ex hire wooden MOBO on the Norfolk Broads with an old BMC diesel, nearly 30years ago now. Easy Start was used on occasions but the boatyard engineers said to only use it sparingly, as eventually it does do damage and you need it all the time..hence the 'addiction' bit, which is exactly the term they used way back then.

He took their word for it, but I confess we never actually asked exactly what damage it caused, but I suspect that a) The lubricity of ether is about nil, so cold start bore wear is likely to be exacerbated b) The explosive ignition might well cause crank damage if over used.

Thats just my guess though

No ! but some engines just can't live without it even from new was my comment ( although unclear in my post :o )As to engine wear through constant use it has not been proved or disproved in any scientific way that I know of -but !!?.

Some of the pseudonyms on here are good.

Mad Hatter from Mine Head has put a smile on my face, particularly with the image of the jolly roger.

Well done madhatter !
