On Sat 30th May two couples (I'm half of one and we have two mostly non-sailing wives) will be hopping on a charter 40ft cruising catamaran in Palma and we're looking for an undemanding week of short hops returning to Palma the following Friday.

I'm thinking a circumnavigation could be a bit of a stretch bearing in mind the above objective and the NW coast looks long with only one refuge.

Any thoughts on an itinerary and other things to bear in mind regarding ports and anchorages will be very useful. Many thanks!

I get the impression that more people on the Motorboat forum regularly visit that part of the med than on Scuttlebutt. You may get more feedback if you post on there as well.

Cabrerra is a good jaunt from Palma. You have to apply for a permit to anchor or spend the night there. A week to do a circumnavigation is too ambitious ir too rushed to enjoy. I would head up the east coast to Pollensa and back That should be doable in a fast cat If not aim to get as far as Cala Ratjada or Alcudia. Anchor in different places for lunch, plenty lovely quite bays up that coast. Overnight in marinas or the cheaper town quays. Beware marinas are expensive. £100 a night for marinas was not uncommon a few years ago for 44 feet. You might pay a lot more for a cat.

Prices for Marinas have topped €200/night for your CAT. ..... IF, repeat IF there is space.

I presume you will pick up the boat in Palma. I would make it a first day to Ses Salines and anchor if the weather Gods are fair. Then to Cabrera.. RESERVE early and stay max duration (2 days), head NE and anchor in any of the numerous nice Calas along the way. Return to Palma.

Good dink is essential. Enjoy. Pack mucho serveza... que calor!

That's what we did and, as mentioned, you need a permit for Cabrera.

Many thanks folks - I'm hoping we will be before peak season so the costs and crowds will be, er moderate although no doubt marinas will load costs for a cat. The cat was selected as a stable sailing platform and we get a hull for each couple with 2 cabins in each. The cat has necessitated a slight mindset adjustment for me but it could be the perfect answer although I doubt there will be any 'row-away looks factor'.

Going east seems to be the answer and any other views most welcome.

1. You could also try this... head NW to Andratx and anchor in the bay. Very crowded in season but you should be OK in May. Superb resto is "Layn". Their seabass in salt crust is fabulous as is their house white wine bottled in Majorca.

2.Then double back for one night in Santa Ponsa bay. Again anchor. Resto ... best pizza is Gusto Divino on the main drag just stbd of the big beach.

3 & 4. Sail to Cabrera. Book 2 days. Nothing but peace and quiet. Provision accordingly in Santa Ponsa. About 35 nm.

5. Ses Salinas... nice beach and some beach front cafes.

6. Head NE to any one of the nearby Calas... anchor out.

7. Head to Palma.

May the wind Gods smile on you. :-) You now have 7 days of nice vistas too.

we sail there every year and use the council marinas - moll transit google them... not sure on the beam of the cat.... but regulary use cala rajarda, porta crista, porta pollenca, cala bona, porta colom. colonia sant pere is nice but is a private marina. if your already in palma don't bother with soller... just get the tram their and back nice ride through the orange and lemon trees. be very careful with the north coast, you can get caught out when the prevailing wind blows from the North down from france. it really kicks up the sea and its not nice..... you could get stuck very quickly.

We are based in Mallorca - albeit on a motor boat.

There will be space in May - we are 21 mts and have failed only one in August ( got one on the next phone call).

Some Marinas peak period starts very early - Portals - which is about as expensive as it get start late so May would not be that dear.

We circumnavigate easily in a week - but we are knocking about at 25 odd knots. If you were to do it on a sailing boat I would imagine you would be sailing quite full days.

The long run is from the top of the island down to the bottom via Soller. That coast can be rough ( and also flat!) with just Soller in the middle.

If you are looking for an easy trip then something out of Palma turn south - Portals / Portals Vells / Bay of Santa Ponza / Andratx / long iday sail to Cabrera and then back to Palma ( 25 miles odd) would give you scenery, ports, anchorages,.short sails, long sails and Cabrera (which is lovely). At no point are you very far from a Marina - even Cabrera is only 10 miles off the coast.

If the weather is poor just skip Cabrera ( it is about E40 per night so losing you booking is not a disaster) and head back into Palma.

The week before is kids half term and we will be there. Weather is usually very nice.

I can recommend a well protected anchorage off Saint Elm also called St Telmo you are well protected by the Isla Dragonara there are moorings for hire here http://www.balearslifeposidonia.eu/fondeiglic.php?id=509 but you can lie to your own hook nearby.
If you zoom out on the map the offshore island is visible.
It is a very pretty quiet resort just a few small hotels and restaurants few tourists go there as no main highway.
