Eastern Adriatic - Croatia and more

Thanks Bart, that is a great start, I am sure we will get round all these places through the summer! Not heard great things about taking the boat to Croatia but as I talk to more people the reviews get better!.

The anti Croatia lobby on this forum is something I just don't understand. We have cruised extensively in the W Med and we've been in Croatia for the last 3 seasons. We think Croatia as a cruising area beats anything in the W Med because of the huge variety of cruising destinations in the Dalmatian island chain and the fact that it is considerably less crowded. Yes, it has it's frustrations, not least the bureaucracy of obtaining a cruising vignette and keeping an updated crew list and, yes, sometimes, the costs for entering national park areas and being forced to use mooring buoys in a few areas are irritating but, overall, the costs of boating in Croatia in terms of annual berthing, fuel and maintenance costs are substantially less than the W Med. You do have to keep half an eye on the weather forecast for any Bora wind forecast and the weather in winter can be cold.
I would say go there with an open mind and just enjoy it
 
Well thats the thing isnt it just to do it anyway, and we will be, it was getting rather dull for a while hearing nothing but bad news about Croatia. We are looking forward to going! Thank you. We spent 2 nights in Sarande - Albania last summer after all sorts of negative press, we went anyway and it was excellent. YM are doing an article on Albania in this months issue.
 
Thanks at least to you all for the more positive comments about the area. We are definitley looking forward to visiting but are arranging the second mortgage at this very moment.....esp. as currently the € has been taking a dive (or alternatively improving) !!

have you visited Cavtat already ? I've many friends over there
we were there 10 summers with a 28ft trailable boat
you know you can stay on anker foc in the Tiha bay (behind the village) for a few nights
but be carefull when they predict Bora

Porto Montenegro is on my todo list, probably / hopefully 2014

Lovely boat! What do you think about Porto Montenegro? Would you recommend it as a permanent base? How far actually is it from Dubrovnik airport by car? What about maintenance? Are there competent maintenance companies in the area?
 
Mike about 1-2 hours from Dubrovnik and Podgorica.The former can be a bit slow in high season due to delays at the border crossing and ferry.
Tivat is 10 min away and Montenegro airlines fly there directly from Gatwick twice a week and once to Podgorica.You can also get to Tivat via a change in Belgrade,Vienna and a few others.Have a look at skyscanner.
The Marina is fine as a permanent base,security is excellent and we(being high maintenance)have not had any problems finding people.Remember the marina used to be a naval shipyard..infact last time I google earthed it ,it still was.If you need any names feel free to PM me.

Thanks Mad Pad. Just checked out some fares on Montenegro Airlines. Not cheap are they! One reason for us to consider Porto Montenegro would be ease of getting there during the winter and all year round flights to Dubrovnik on BA is certainly an attraction. What's the winter weather like in Porto Montenegro because another reason to move would be a milder winter climate compared to further north in Croatia?
 
Plus side of Montenegro Air is sensible times ex Gatwick,Scheduled Airline and Tivat Airport is 5mins from marina.Dubrovnik and Podgorica are about a 100euro taxi ride.Croatia Air and BA do Dubrovnik all year.For a few days probably cheaper to hire a car then you can go skiing as well...only 2 hr drive from marina.With regard to weather best Goole it but in my experiance colder than Corfu with as much if not more rain.I'm going down in a few weeks time and will do down to Dudrovnik..gets you to PM late afternoon,and back Tivat(dept about 8am) Belgrade,Belgrade London(arrive lunchtime).Also don't forget the tax free fuel.You can fill up as long as you are checking out(so go to Cavtat for lunch)and then come back in the evening.Finally there are some seriously good restaurants in and around the Bay of Kotor.PS Google Earthed PM today and it's still a naval base!

The skiing sounds interesting. Is there much there and how long does the season last? How much does the duty free fuel actually cost at the moment?
 
Now that this thread has reached 10 pages, is it worth working out which of us will be sailing in the Adriatic this season?

I will be there in May and June. I have bought "pre-owned" Scuttlebug burgee to fly and to identify myself.

We will be returning to our base in Marina Frapa near Split probably in late April from our winter base in Italy. A couple of years ago we had a lovely cruise down to Dubrovnik in June and I'm thinking of repeating that but going on further south to check out Porto Montenegro. I might leave the boat there for a few weeks and then come back later to cruise her north again. I want to explore the anchorages of Mjlet and Lastovo as well. We will certainly be on the boat most of August too. We too fly the mobo forum burgee from our radar arch. I was going to say look out for a Brit flagged mobo called Sumianda but of course we're likely to be Croatian flagged this year due to the VAT issue

We should be in the area from June to September going up to Venice from the Ionian and then slowly returning. Dark blue hulled yacht that you'll have already overtaken. For those that know Croatia and Montengro we are looking to leave the boat for about 3 weeks in early August so can anyone recommend a safe and reasonably priced mooring or marina ?

Personally I'm not sure I'd leave my boat for any length of time in one of the state owned ACI marinas
