It is Easter in Greece, Good Friday yesterday was May 3. All week there have been bangs from fireworks during the day, at no particular time. Yesterday afternoon there were several massive explosions in Lakki, with the same assortment of smaller bangs. Last night there was a procession along the promenade, again with fireworks and bangs.

Saturday morning we have already had many quite loud explosions by 0700 and we are told that it really takes off at midnight tonight. Free party at the marina bar tomorrow, hopefully rather more quiet.

Where is the link between the church's most sacred festival and bomb scale explosions?

Hi Vyv,

Maybe the loud bangs will drown out the boy racers on the front in Lakki! We are getting a bit of this in Crete but not as bad as your's sound, but I am told tonight is the big one..........we shall see.

We are anchored across the bay from Elounda and will, hopefully, have a great view of the fireworks tonight.

We're missing the Greek Easter this year, arriving Weds. Very loud bangs are quite the norm in Corfu. I often wonder where they get all the explosives from!

At midnight on Kefalonia the locals will emerge from the Churches, all will be carrying a lit Candle, the Candle should be kept alight and taken home, on foot or by car. When the home is reached the candle should be used to make a black burnt smoke cross at the top of the front door casing. This will give you good luck and ward off evil spirits!
After midnight all hell is let loose, the harbour will be blasted with fireworks, the tavernas will fill up with peeps!
I am not religious but it is worth a look.

Just about now in Corfu town a load bang goes off (midday - Easter Saturday) and everyone who knows dives into the nearest doorway as crockery starts raining down from the apartments above. An old Corfiot custom apparently. Just afterwards the lambs get their throats cut and used to be left to exsanguinate from the balconies into the streets. By the time I post this the streets should be awash with blood and broken crockery ( a bit like a Saturday night out in Glasgow?). But then tonight they serve a special offal soup which is delicious and kokoretzi which is even better.

If there's any way you can blag an invite to someones Easter lunch tomorrow then jump at it. Greek Easter is the best of all and in Corfu it's the best in all of Greece. Many great memories from there. I apparently proposed to my wife after a Greek Easter lunch so I'm told. Grab a few tsiperos and you never know what will happen.

Wherever you are in Greece, enjoy the weekend. I'm jealous.....

Kristo Anesti!

The place to be at midnight is down by the lake in Ag. Nik as you can see from the picture posted by Tony. They have an effigy(?) floating in the middle of the lake and ceremoniously torch it. A great spectacle!

They're doing the same here in Elounda - Judas gets a hot ride on the ocean wave!

All relatively quiet in Porto Heli, a few loud bangs coming up to midnight last night, then everyone left the church & surrounding area with their candles. We had candles as well & left them lit by the boat on the town quay. A Greek lady relit hers from ours after checking that ours had been lit from the ones starting from the church. Judas will be getting his comeuppance later today, I think they send him out on an old boat & blow him up with dynamite & there's fireworks...
