East Coaster heading further East

I have great memories of a trip through there a few years ago.
If you should visit the British Kiel Yacht Club beware of their hospitality. I can remember going to the bar but have no idea how we got back to the boat later!
Also, if they still do it, go for the all you can eat breakfast, it was 1 Euro in 2008.

That's the bridge where a chap in a kiosk reads out the statistics of each ship passing while playing the relevant national anthem. I don't think he does it for the many yachts but we have had the anthem played for us. There's quite a nice cafe alongside and it makes an interesting visit if you are in Rendsberg and have bikes. There's a similar service given at the front in Cuxhaven, though without the anthems. The Germans take their pleasures very seriously.

If all goes well - touch wood - we plan to be that way next Easter for three months. Keep us updated on what it's like please!

Nothing to do with me, AliM (now safely in Heikendorfer Yacht Club Marina) is the star of the show.....

Holtenau lock operations can be well seen on this Live webcam - http://www.kielmonitor.de/webcam/schleuse-holtenau/

I suspect that might be the last of webcam views of Alshira for a while....

Thanks, Boz!

He has been stalking us on AIS for a while now!

For anyone who is trying to use the marine traffic site to follow a boat on AIS, or even as a sort of poor mans AIS, beware. There are big blind spots. Our shore contact was monitoring where we were, supplementing the frequent texts when we report in. He said that we disappeared completely just outside Borkum, reappearing 30 miles further on, and disappeared again off Nordeney, and only appeared coming into Cuxhaven, 40 miles later, having apparently sailed over two islands!

I noticed those gaps myself... I stopped using Marine Traffic sometime ago and now use Vessel Finder which I find much quicker and more reliable. Generally just for friends boats and to check my own AIS signal but AliM's itinarary through Holland was intriguing and close to my plan for later in the summer.
