First week in September we will be going for a gentle (10 knots) wander along the lower east coast and just wondered where's good and where's not.

Coo.
Take a dinghy/outboard and enhance the trip....
Well, Burnham and the Crouch is worth a couple of days. Particularly the North Fambridge pontoon fo rthe Ferry Boat Inn (good real ale, and pub grub), or further up, anchor in Brandy Hole just outside Hullbridge, and visit Brandy Hole YC. Good Thai food.

Bradwell famous for Green Man, try to avoid weekend, its popular.

Get to West Mersea and hang on an empty buoy for nowt, then into the Company Shed (superlative seafood, no license take your own, but it shuts at 5 or the West Mersea YC welcoming.

Brightlingsea always good, take the water taxi (last one back at 2300), Kovalam, South Indian food, esp fish curries, also YC is good.

Opposite Brightlingsea is Stone Point Mersea Beach, good anchorage, but you are on your own.

Walton Backwaters great for anchoring. Walton YC is good but dries, Titchmarsh is a bit remote and the food is overpriced in the Marina Bar.

Levington and the Lighthouse good, in fact the Orwell worth a couple of days too. Woolverstone good but dear, Pin Mill hang off a buoy and time the run to the Butt & Oyster, or walk the mud to the dinghy.

Wrabness on the Stour an interesting choice, again, hang off a buoy or anchor in the visitor area. Not tried to land there.

Beyond there be Deben, Ore and Alde, I will let someone else do those!
