East Coast Rivers 20th Edition. Do not be tempted to ignore CopperasSHB and ReculverPHB as suggested on page 189. Route is described correctly on page 192.
Similarly travelling from the south the route for the Crouch/Spitway it is suggested direct from Maplin Bank, page 189. The safer route on a falling tide is to head for Maplin Approach in Middle Deep before turning Westwards to cross Whitaker Spit.

20th edition? There's posh!

Has anyone else got the actual FIRST (1903, written by Lt SVC Messum RN) edition?

It's second claim to fame is that it is the original of the "slim book" on which the denouement of the plot turns in "The Riddle of The Sands"

It's still pretty good, but its advisable to carry the 20th (21st?) edition as well...

On no account should you attempt to go direct from the Maplin Bank buoy to the Spitway. Apart from serious lack of water crossing the tip of Foulness Sand, you would pass through the Firing Range and possibly have your hair parted by a stray artillery shell. Maplin Approach to the Spitway will usually give you plenty of water although with shoal draught you can feel your way round the Whitaker Spit a little earlier and cut the corner off. I tend to ignore the new buoyage in the Middle Deep, I must admit, but still beware straying into the firing area (the old NE Maplin was within the area!!) and you still have the shallows of the Whitaker to contend with.

Just showing off now :)

No, no. I didn't mention J C Imray, Wilson, Cooke (surely the finest Cruising Companion ever writen but of course now out of date) nor even every edition of East Coast Rivers (every 20 editions), all four East Coast Pilot. If I had mentioned those, that would have been showing off..

Whoops:o:o:o:o:o
