Ahoy ya scurvy lot

We're thinking about holding the Pirates day on Saturday the 8th of August, with a raincheck on the 15th if the weather doesn't play ball. ( I know, it's the UK in August, what could possibly go wrong? )

HW is at approx 1530 which I think would allow plenty of time for people to arrive and have fun before a BBQ.

Really? Is this a joke? You want to arrange a mass gathering and a BBQ.

Do you clap for carers every Thursday? Well there's no need to stab them in the back is there

Nope... not a mass gathering. Pirates day can easily be done with social distancing, IF AND ONLY IF we are able to anchor overnight.

It's 3 months away, and possibly something to look forward to. Who knows what the situation will be in 3 months time?

Everyone can bring portable BBQ's, and be separated far enough away from each other, we can wave at each other from our boats and fly pirate flags.

There is a new normal right now, so I'm putting this date in the diary and IF WE ARE ABLE to do something FANTASTIC!
If we can't.... well let's postpone it till we can.

Sorry if my optimism offends?
 
Sounds like a great idea and as you say can be practised safely at a distance but whilst still enjoying some good old pirate fun. I shall order a Jolly Roger immediately and look out a suitable plank from the garage.

Maybe I should have been more detailed in my original post, but I thought that people would not think I would be so stupid as to be suggesting a mosh pit.

It's a Pirates Day. Dress up as Pirates and have fun. Or is having fun banned?

If we can't land and have BBQ's in individual groups 10 metres apart, then we could all dress up, hoist Jolly Rogers and have a sail around cork sand whilst hoisting insults on signal flags.

It's whatever we decide to make it.

If this still offends people, then ***** it, I'll delete the post and forget about it.

Ahoy there dolabriform, think that you might have goton the wrong idea if your comments were aimed at my posting, I agree with having Pirate Days, a dam good idea, just thinking that having a Pirate Day was considered to be the norm, I just wish it were ?

Talk has it that down ere in Teignmouth in time past the Harbour Master (or assistants) pulled over a Craft flying a Skull & Cross Bones an informed them to take it down, if true I think that it was unnecessary and stupid an action; I often fly a Skull & Crossbones plus wear an eye patch, but thats of necessity

Sorry Cap'n, guess I'm a little fed up with certain aspects of the current situation.

We're trying very hard to maintain a sense of normality (whatever the crap that might be) for the kids everyday, even tho they are probably managing better than we are.

I can't see why a Pirates day can't be the norm? After the applause every Thursday, our musician neighbours play some music in their front garden and almost the whole street comes out and dances ( 2m away from each household group of course ). They have been doing street parties for years, so this is the adaptation for right now, and it makes people smile.

Are these different times? Yes, certainly. But does that mean that we can't try to find ways of putting a smile on peoples faces?

I hear talk of the same british spirit that got us through the blitz and the war. I can bet they were trying everything they could to find some kind of cheer in the gloom?

Anyway rant over, I hope the story about the harbormaster is fake news. And I hope even more that you can sail round to the east coast and join us so that I can raise a glass to you ( from a safe, approved distance of course )

This is a nearly 3 months away, where we'll be with social distancing/poncing about being frightened of everyone then, is anyones guess.

An event like this might give the ECF something to look forward to and with the right approach could be done sensibly.

'Stabbing carers in the back' a little OTT in my opinion.

So the virus is going to disappear in the next three months. That's good news. It's not a case of being frightened of everyone but being responsible and considerate to all around i.e. keeping 2 meters apart. That's what I am not seeing at present from a good few people and people seem to have forgotten where we were a few weeks ago so in my opinion this is totally irresponsible and I stick by it.

I have no idea about the virus at the proposed date, XYDave doesn't have access to a time machine at this moment in time.

What I do know is there are optimists and pessimists in this world, it's easy to see where we both fall in that spectrum.
 
We are still in Portugal in lock down. We were supposed to be back in Walton for Easter but that was not to be.

If we are back, we will be at Stone Point for the event.✅

Some will know that in the past I was in the hot seat and we had odd problems then like foot ‘n mouth and swine flu but always managed to organise around that but stay within the rules then currently in force. The weather was our biggest problem‼️

Rather than club orientated, the Pirates, were very much an inclusive event mounted out of Burnham but open to all. One of the secrets of it’s success was minimum organisation & maximum fun. Just pitch up an do what Pirates do - whatever that is?

Dolabriform made an excellent fist setting it all up last year and I have no doubt he will make sure it will be as good this year. Even if I can’t make it, if requested, I will again act in the liaison role.

As to us, well it is a funny old world, in winter we live onboard in Lagos in the Western Algarve, an area that has had only one case of Covid (brought in by a returning Brit, who has now fully recovered). Initially there was strict lockdown but no ageism. The national policy was/is the elderly are perfectly able to make rational decisions about their safety so do not need extra restrictions placed upon them.

It has worked; in The Algarve with a resident population of 1/2million, we have had about 350 cases and only 15 deaths. All of these were elderly with underlying health problems. Nearly all cases were brought in from abroad and outside of Albufeira there has been no cross community transmission. Needless to say the Government are being held in very high esteem for theIr handling of this crisis.

To this background much of lockdown has been rescinded. Currently, no vessels (Portuguese or foreign flagged) are allowed to enter Portuguese Waters but there are designated harbours of refuge for vessels in transit (Crossing the Atlantic to Europe: Where Can I Stop? | Noonsite) - Lagos is one but as yet, we have had no visitors✅

If/when they arrive they will be quarantined on board and required to leave once they have replenished, refuelled and are fit to continue their passage. The mooring is close to the maritime police and immigration and they don’t take prisoners.

For the past 10 days vessels of all flags have been permitted to day sail but only Portuguese residents are permitted to anchor out or visit other harbours or marinas.

The irony is, because of Brexit many of the Brits out here have now got Portuguese Residencia, we can sail as we wish. Unfortunately our European friends although members of the EU are not Portuguese residents so are restricted in their activities. Not surprising the EU folk are now getting Portuguese residency??

Oh yes, as Portuguese residents we are not restricted to the 90/180 day rule in the Schengen Zone so post the transition period, using our Portuguese residency, we will still be able to take the UK boat and spend as long as we like in Norther Europe - not that that is likely to happen.?

Fair enough so I take it, you won’t be there?. Should add this is probably the easiest event for social distancing.?

What, if any, are your sailing plans for this season❓
