BB offered the suggestion that a (small) of owners group would be in a pretty strong bargaining position.

There's quite a number of Orwell based boats on here - some marina based some on a mooring.
AFAIK there are two marinas offering both - Woolverstone & SYH, so they should be our first ports of call.
As Woolverstone's obviously feeling the pinch, so maybe them even more than SYH. After all SYH claims to have a 5 year waiting list.

So, how about it? Any Orwell based boatowners feeling Bolshi? How about some customer power and collective bargaining? Where's my soapbox?
 
If I was on my own, I'd be first in line. My decisions over the last couple of years have been based around trying to introduce a complete non sailor to the er... delights without causing too many problems. It'll probably be another couple of seasons before I'm in a position to be able to flex my right to move - although I shall be calling the HM at Brightlingsea soon - re my earlier post!

Getting on the waiting list (I assume there is still one) will cost you £10 per annum until a berth appears.

Used to be at Woolverstone with my previous boat - in 3 years on a swinging mooring I paid out more than the boats value! Only took the mooring as it was:
1. Available where I bought the boat
2. Water taxi to take me out with young kids (8 & 6 - well the 2 that ever came sailing)
3. Relatively convenient to home

MDLs parting gesture was to rip off my rubbing strake the week before I left for B'sea. Not used a MDL marina since. I don't hold a grudge!!

Interesting idea but only stands some hope of success if berths look like they will remain unfilled, dont know your neck of the river too well but on the crouch Fambridge was over subscribed but i believe that Burnham YH had quite a few empty spaces last season (expensive i think, well too rich for my blood)
BTW FC any idea of the rate for mooring at R&C quite fancy hanging around there for a season or two.

join Royal Corinthian, and get a swinging mooring with them (which are administered by Rice & Cole anyway.
Same service, just works out that Joint membership & Club mooring fee - Rice & Cole, mainly due to no VAT.
35ft around 1400 quid all in, with Winter.

I'm sorry to hear of your trouible with MDL. I've had pretty good service from SYH, although they are expensive and occaionally don't do the work which they bill you for, without gentle reminders.
When I bought my boat I was expecting to be on my own, so bought a boat of a size and design that I thought I'd manage single handed. I also expected to be on a swinging mooring. Whilst I was pleasantly (no really!) surprised at the interest shown by the boss, it has ripped up my original budgeting and cruising plans completely.
I will be looking at Brightlingsea, but I fear that a requirement for pontoon access will be set for a while yet !
 
slight drift but have bradwell given an idea of their 08 prices. I'm waiting to see if I have secured a small berth for my 22ftr. I like maylandsea but the lack of, well, sea, means I'm trying to move.
 
Yep I've had my Bradwell bill. £65 per foot plus VAT if paid in advance and £75.90 plus VAT for monthly standing order (cheaper to borrow the money and pay up front /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif).

That's an annual contract - launch £4.30 a foot plus VAT and a haulout and pressure wash £6.50.

Thanks for the info, though the idea of joining another club makes my blood run cold (had enough of the one we are members of) though could prob keep a low profile.

Thanks, thats about £30 more than maylandsea, but for me 8 hours more access a day than maylandsea. In a little boat unless you are prepared to camp over, 4 hours doesn't provide much day sailing. I suspect I will take the offer if can get a berth. The office seemed to think shouldn't be a problem finding space for a boat my size.

Is anyone a member of a blackwater sailing club?
 
Some friends of ours are just selling their Leisure 20 and will get moved to another pontoon. So you might get the berth next to Centaurpipedream - ask for a discount /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif (sorry Alan /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

There is a Bradwell Cruising Club (see their website) and some belong the Bradwell Quay YC. I don't belong to nuffink.

Hmm saw the bradwell club website. I liked the idea of a bit of occassional club racing. BSC looks a bit serious.
 
FYI D21 or is it D19 was empty at Bradwell all last season. Add to that Roger's comments re his friends moving and you should have no problem. Come to think of it, A33 should be empty now, maybe just watch your depth. Cant remember now if the oxalic acid mixture I dumped in Sabre should have perhaps come out after 30 mins or was it 30 days. Mmmmm .........

Sailed round the IOW but abandoned to Yarmouth due to simply awful weather and not too sure about the boat. Then had a brilliant sail to Brighton and back to Portsmouth via Lymington. F0 to F8, take your pick, horizontal and vertical rain, hot sun, cold sun, clear visibility and fog. 5 great days, brilliant way to start the year, didnt want to come back, nuff said ! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So is the Centaur "Pipedream" close to the workshops your Pipedream or the other Pipedream? (& assume it's Roger's Sabre on the hard close to the tower).

Yep thats mine, hopefully back in the wet stuff by the end of January. the other one, I think, is in west Mersea altho I have never actually seen it.

that's me by the tower - 4 Moody 31s in a row. They may be common as muck but there are 346 Centaurs only 3 of which ever go sailing /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. It's a retirement home for old Westerlies /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
