hi all ,looking for the best harbour to use as a jumping off point for holland 2010,4 boats coming down from the north east.

I guess it depends on where in Holland you are heading for. I'm planning a jaunt towards Ijmuiden next week starting from Bradwell in the Blackwater tho you wouldnt want to come that far south. I would have thought you should be looking at Lowestoft/Great Yarmouth area (there will be others who will come along I am sure with the direct experience of those areas that I dont have) or Felixstowe/Harwich (where I would thoroughly reccomend Shotley Marina which has great facilities). The problem is there is little in the way of choice once you pass Brilington on the way South, so if you want to keep the hop to Holland relatively short then you will have to come a lot further South, hence my thinking. Your best bet has to be Lowestoft which will give you a straight run E to den Helder (104m)
or slightly longer SE to Ijmuiden. Good choice of interior ports from both landing points.
The considerations are that when heading for Helder if it blows NE hard you might get deflected to Ijmuiden because there is no haven on the Dutch coat between the two ports.
But either port is very capable and a good refuge; shipping is heavy at Ijmuiden but predictable and orderly (unlike the Maas entrance) At Helder you must approach with a favourable tide to avoid the heavy outflow on the ebb.
You might be tempted to go direct from the Humber to the Islands north of Helder - but the approach through the seagats is challenging in anything but fine weather in daylight. Suggest you leap off home from there.
Going further south than Lowestoft confers no advantage but if your trip takes you south in Holland (eg Breskens) you could make Harwich your landfall and then work the coast home.

Couple of years ago we left Marconi SC (opposite Osea) sailed up the coast to about Orfordness before heading over to Ijmuiden which seemes to work well (apart from the fog!)

As intimated by the others, it depends on how long a crossing you want to make. If you want to do it in a day trip, the longest would be something like Harwich area to the Roompot or Flushing. Usually getting to Holland is no problem; it's getting back that's sometimes hard.
