....whilst sailing to Burnham last Sunday. Seen plenty in Wales sailing with my son but never seen one on the east coast before. Was I mistaken or was it lost?
You're not seeing things , there were a couple of sightings on the Burnham to Ostend crossing and the books were checked to make sure they were Gannets
often see whole squadrons of them offshore east coast, peeling off and dive bombing into the sea.
As said, they have a huge range and the Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth is home to a 60,000 bird colony.
Re: East Coast birdwatchers - thought I saw a gannet....
Great birds. I've also seen a guillemot off Felixstowe & a dead one in the Colne. We seldom cross the southern North Sea without seeing the odd fulmar.
We've seen gannets not far offshore when crossing to Holland - wonderful birds to watch! also lots of fulmars, which are extending their range round Britain quite amazingly (according to my seriously birdy brother-in-law). There is often a guillemot in the Crouch in the winter - we have seen it several times in the last 2 or 3 years.
