I note from Radio Navigation Warning NAVAREA I 153/18 that my old friend the East Channel Light-buoy, 49-58.7N 002-28.9W, is now permanently discontinued. Notwithstanding GPS etc it was always reassuring to see when crossing the Channel that handy signpost flashing away to confirm that the electronic gizmos were speaking the truth. Hey Ho; progress I suppose.

There is always Estimated Position and flagging down a steam ship to confirm your position.

thread drifting based on that...it's all very well me looking up "Foxtrot Alpha" in my pdf of the ICOS but has anyone here (in the last 30 years....) successfully managed to communicate with commercial or military vessel using anything more than a single flag hoist?
