Hi,

Question is as title, has anyone here replaced a Volvo Penta MD11 23hp inboard engine and happen to know which modern substitute is the most straightforward / cheapest to refit ?

Thanks,

Speak to Beta in Stroud. They do custom feet to make the job easier . You will benefit from getting what they call a high rise exhaust as this reduces the chance of back flooding. Something often ignored when re engining with a lower profile engine.

There have been a few posts on here from peeps who have re engined using the new Volvo and Beta ranges and damaged the engines as a result of back flooding.

I've replaced my one with an new MD2030 29 pk. Including saildrive.
Volvo Penta has a set available to match the new motor on the old holes.

It's working fine, only missing the old diesel sound. ;-)

I should say that I am not currently thinking of replacing it with another Volvo.

I replaced an 11c with beta 28 two years ago no problems.I got the standard version and adapted the beds to suit, the distance across the beta feet was the same but the whole engine had to be raised about 12mm.I used flat bar for this bolted to the old bed using the threads from the volvo mountings.

I replaced the MD11c on my Centaur over winter with a Beta.... I had a couple of mates help but it wasn't difficult.

Re the high rise exhaust elbow, Beta do one but most of the other manufacturers either dont supply one or will quote for custom made ie very expensive.
Well worth fitting as filling the engine with sea water usually bends con rods, breaks cylinder heads etc.

hi rise

if you can uplift the output hose from the heat exchanger to a jabsco usually 19mm elbow with breather about a foot and a half above water level.and make sure the plastic duck is big enough to take the non expelled water in the exhaust pipe when the engine is shut down. a plastic wave preventer at the transom or route the exhaust up under the deck. vetus (terribly expensive) or the italian copy is half the price.be sure and safe.

Sorry, but what's a plastic duck ? Also, do you have links for the Vetus and Italian copies so I can see what you are referring to ?

Thanks to all for the replies,
