Earthrace sunk

I think that's Jap editing for you.........

I hope you aren't serious! :D

They have happily admitted to using the lasers.

and a vid, maybe the Japanese added the towed warp later.....

I dont think it is that straight forward though.

Just because they had been misbehaving (badly) earlier is it right for a Japanese security ship to hunt them down and ram them ?

It is not a Japanese whaling ship under attack that has hit earthrace, it is a Japanese security vessel that has gone out its way to ram Earthrace in retaliation for a previous attack from another separate incident.

Those mobos who berth in Chichester have to put up with this sort of behaviour from HISC most weekends and they ' dont take them out' as soon as they get to Eaststoke

Perhaps the Japanese should be asked to sort out the Somali pirates !

You need to see the collision from this angle

I just praise these guys, they do great work IMHO. They have to use dirty tactics like warp snagging , ramming etc. seems like a load a people think they should just wag a finger at these whaling ships, not quite sure what good that would do. They are taking direct action & I don't apologise for supporting them 100%.

So when the Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, or some new activists start attacking your business cos you are keeping those evil, Earth-destroying, climate-changing cars on the road, that'll be OK then.....

Japan is involved in blatant illegal whaling activities in our territorial waters, the continued existance of a healthy whale population on our coastal regions is crucial for the survial of many commercial operations.

This may be of little consequence to folk living on the other side of the world, but I wonder how the Brits would respond if one of their valuable resourses was being pilfered.......... I'll just go and check my history books..;)

These radical 'whale huggers' are the only defence we have, as our government hasn't got the balls to do anything about it.

I've read that before....over here.

Australia should do some robust diplomatic lobbying to the Japanese embassy, but instead they sent the federal police to arrest half of the Steve Irwin's crew last year. Your government is sending mixed messages to the Japanese so they will continue to take 'your' whales.

Andiemac, thank-you. I couldn't sum up the effort for a response, and now glade I didn't as it wouldn't have been as eloquent as yours.

I haven't seen the 'reality TV' version of whale wars, but can only assume it is really factual and not exaggerated...

At least your Prime Minister actually looks like a man, ours resembles the 'milky bar kid' and a total soft cock, no wonder the japs aren't concerned.

It is clear from this video, independent of both vessels involved, that the Japanese were trying to get alongside them for a chat or something http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rar9zxH1kts

It is clearly an unfortunate collision, 'knock for knock' perhaps.

Brown trousers on Earthrace come to mind

From this clip the jap ship certainly seems to turn from a heading that would have cleared the Ady Gil onto a collision course-an intimidatory move perhaps?-that the helmsman/captain misjudged...I'm sure they wouldn't have deliberately rammed them...would they...?

The ex earthrace boat, now operated by the conservation group Sea Shepherd appears to have been sunk in a collision with a whaling vessel.
Sorry dont know how to link to the news item!

Unless her mods included rudders then she was most the most manoeuvrable of speed machines. :)

It might have gone unnoticed, but I'm against the whaling.

I'm also against endangering lives at sea....

As am I, but get fed up with all the inaction to resolve the issue.

Otoh why do the japs also insist on the confrontation, they know what is going to be waiting for them, they are there every year.
All for the sake of a couple of thousand whales.......is whale meat that valuable in Japan?

Or is it a matter of arrogance, how dare these people stop us from our theft spree.....

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not questioning the truth of your statement, but as a land-locked non-fisherman from the opposite side of the world, how?

I think it's more a case of "How very dare the rest of the world try and tell us what to do", despite being clearly in the wrong.

An economy the size of Japan isn't going to fail or succeed because of a few thousand whales, but for them, it's a matter of principle (to ignore the worldwide ban on whaling that every other country respects).

How on earth did they get the exemption to catch whales for "scientific research" in the first place? Bloody big concession in my book: what did the rest of the civilised world get in return?

Whale watching operations are significant to our coastal ports from Eden (south east corner) up to the Whitsunday Islands (far north Queensland) and all ports in between, over 1500 miles of coast.
Most of our tourism operations, if you don't like deserts, are based on the coast/beaches. The creatures are becoming nearly iconic features of aussie beach/coastal areas.

We don't need them thinned out....

Has the Ady Gil actually sunk or just damaged ?

Its not actually sunk yet but the bow is missing so it can only go astern, the seastate is what you and I would consider rough.

They have the Bob Barker on hand to tow backwards assuming there are good cleats which I very much doubt.

even if they get it back and I am not sure it is really worth repairing.

Two good CMD diesels in it but they have a lot of rough hours on them, bit of nav gear but the rest of the boat is a shed, anyone who has been on it will have been surprised at the low standard of internal fit (done for weight ) but it made a McGregor look luxurious, bare fibreglass in the cabins , wire hanging around sort of held in place with tape.
