More information (link above) suggests that talk of 'tsunami' is exaggerated. Greek seismologist estimates 70cm high tidal wave, which has caused localised flooding along the Bodrum peninsula

I have had a call from my marina, Port Iasos, thirty miles North of Bodrum , to say there was no damage there. Going out again in two weeks but wasn't planning on visiting Bodrum this time.

Post from a mate of mine about the mini tsunami:

"Shaken awake by the earthquake. Then spent two hours attending to the lines as a mini tsunami came repeatedly in and out. The water level changed about 1.2 metres in 8 mins then repeated this over the next few hours. No one is hurt here in Kardamania harbour though one boat which broke it's moorings was flushed out of the harbour spinning as it went. Argonauta is OK minus a few squashed fenders. Hope anyone else sailing in the area is also OK."

So although the tsunami wasn't much in actual rise and fall, it clearly had quite an effect in the harbour.

Very interesting. I guess that many of us grew up thinking of a tsunami as a single massive wave, towering 50 or 60 feet above the normal sea level. However the recent extensive film footage on the tsunamis in Phuket and Japan shows a very different effect, as described by duncan99210's friend. More a series of relentless surges, both incoming and then outgoing. No less terrifying if one is unlucky enough to be caught in them close to the shore.

Interesting. I experienced a similar sized tsunami in NZ some years ago, about 60cm, which was no different from the wave height at the time. Nevertheless its effect was much more dramatic, first sucking back the sea from the beach, and then crashing in. I guess they carry a lot more energy than normal waves.
