OK, my situation is that I have no AC circuit on my boat. I have an external power lead with a double outdoor socket box attached for use on those rare occasions when I need mains power on my boat. I have an RCD built into the socket. I've never thought this was unsafe before, but the recent posts regarding the need for Galvanic isolators and earthing on board has led me to question my conclusion. Is this arrangement safe to use on board? It is independent of any boat wiring.

Assuming the assembly is in good condition and the RCD works when tested, I've have no qualms whatsoever about using it.

If whatever you're using the mains for on board has no electrical connection to any metalwork on the boat then I'm fairly sure that a galvanic isolator would serve no useful purpose at all.

+1. Galvanic isolators allow boat earth and shore earth to differ by a few volts (unless a significant fault current occurs) because stray currents in the sea mean that your boat may not be sitting in a bit of water at 0V. If there is no connection between boat earth and shore earth then there is no point whatsoever in having a galvanic isolator.
