Faced with singlehanding my 12 tonner (draws 1.8m) from IOW to Cherbourg I am trying to avoid the early morning haul out from Gosport etc. Now, where do the clever guys hook off for a spot of kip before setting off? Any thoughts?

Obviously wind dependant on the day. You can anchor almost anywhere. I have used Sandown, Totty and Freshwater Bays quite a lot either waiting for tide or in thick Fog and have found the holding good. If its calm I have even spent a night tucked under the cliff inshore of Atherton Ledge on the South Coast.

Quite often use Priory bay just out side Bembridge. Saves you about an hour from sunny gosport.

In the past I have anchored off Shanklin overnight (subject to prevailing conditions) for an early start across the Channel.

Lymnington is nice. Irrelevant for the trip, but free if you arrive after 8pm and leave befoee 7 in the miorning, ahem, and nicer than Gosport for a late pint.

Re: Less deep sleep better

I have single handed across the channel a few times and would prefer to start the crossing after 4 hours of deep sleep snug in a Marina rather 5 or 6 hours of light sleep at anchor.

Maybe this says something about my confidence in my anchoring technique.

I find I can do 36 hours of sailing single handed providing my sleep battery is fully topped up before.

36 hours without sleep,is a long time!Performance must be severely degraded,or do you "cat nap".
Not a criticism but since being involved in some sleep deprivation studies in the 70s,it's a bit of a personal hobby horse.
The main problem is that ones perception of performance does not change, but measured performance of arithmetical and motor tasks shows marked deterioration over time without sleep.

There are loads of studies on this all over the net,one particularly worrying one claimed you lost one IQ point for every hour of sleep lost which means that a long night watch would reduce me to the intellectual equivalent of a potato.

There are some mooring buoys just N of Bembridge Life Boat station attached to which I have slept securely on a number of occasions. Alternatively, if the tide works for you and you pick up a mooring off Yarmouth after the HM has gone to bed, you can be off it before he gets up.

Havent tried it, but were I to do it now, Id look at the new Marina on the East of IOW. I recall some moorings laid off there?

Ventnor

Presume you are referring to the 'fairweather haven" at Ventnor. I would advise not taking anything much bigger than 22 feet in there. It's very small and dries. Really, it's there for some of the local potting boats. There may be mooring buoys off, but if so they are not public ones. It is a decent anchorage though in the right condits.
