Earls Court a trip down memeory lane

Re: Earls Court a trip down memory lane

Well I enjoyed it!

Sold two life rafts, three personal EPIRB and one once only suit!!

Royal Machines put on a display, as they abseiled down the outside of the building and as they landed, the doors opened.

I enjoyed today.

Food and drink people took the pee though as usual, although we found that the little pizza type place just outside the gate on the left did a very good spread for a third of the price, I recommend them for food.

Anyway a good day for us today, look forward, as has been said, for tomorrow, a true reflection.

Al.

Jez...MoBo manufacturers have alway's been able to see the benefits of marketing the products that they sell, in a competetive, professional and highly competant manner. As a saily boat type person, I have alway's been suprised at the lack of similar marketing expertise by the Rag & Stick brigade. Which would perhaps account for the lack of a modern presence of MoodyWesterly et al:

Well the Air Conditioning still doesn't work, it took just a long to get from Waterloo to EC as it does to get to Excel, the taxi fair was almost identical, the catering franchise at EC hasn't improved and a pint of the black stuff was £3.65p

But most of all apart from Gipsy Moth IV and a handful of boats in the pool this is a boat show with no sail boats, if you want to buy a Jacuzzi or some clothing for xmas go ahead otherwise best save your money for Excel,

Oh and i can feel the sore throat coming on - just like the old days!

oh my god what a whinging old git. I bet u were one of the moaners when the show moved to xcel.

Try enjoying life- we went up to the show today and loved it.

First you have to be able to spell it!
At the end of the day most of us will only visit one show and for me it will be Excel because all the exhibitors are there and it's very professionally presented. I don't need another one trying to muscle in on the market. The good side is that it makes the Excel lot concentrate more.

actually I thought moving to Excel was a step in the right direction - I have been disappointed with the lack of imagination from BMIF / NBS since the move. Glad you had a great day - but I thought it wasn't what it was billed as, be interesting to see the feedback over the next couple of days.

Thanks for the spelling correction!

WE will give an unbiased feed back on Monday.

From 12 raggies doing the Show on Sunday, from Glos,Bath and Cardiff.

Only two stars and by the way who was James Caird?

I was given free tickets and went with my son. To be honest I was glad the tickets were free because if I'd paid I would have thought it a swizz. Funnily enough the historical stuff (James Caird, various mad blokes rowing from Nova Scotia, a visit to Gypsy Moth IV) was brilliant, but I'm not sure you go to the boat show for it. The trouble is there were not many present day boats. No engine mfrs. Little chandlery. No electronics mfrs. Where could you discuss a chart package? I never found anyone. Where could you discuss (for instance) using one way ratchet blocks on your roller reefing headsail? I wanted to but couldn't find any sign of Harken or any other block or winch manufacturer. Instead you could buy almost anything made of teak while listening to very loud tannoys describing fantasist marine display showing how fit and good at roly poly display hand to hand they were (Sorry chaps the Taliban carry AK47s). Was YM or PBO there? I couldn't find them. Perhaps I'd got a bit grumpy by then. There were enough clothes and shoes to convince me I was at the other end of the District Line in Petticoat Lane. A visit to the first floor will introduce you to enormous displays of photos and paintings, assorted bits of old hovercraft, an inflatable basking shark and various other bits of rubbish BUT NOT TO BE MISSED is a conversation with the submarine guys who will tell you how they saved seven Russian sailors from the floor of (I think) the Baltic. Okay, that was great stuff. Earls COurt is a modest beginning. But I will look carefully at the list of exhibitors before I go again.

I haven't bothered to read all of the above - Richard Shead's responses beggared belief! Wrong attitude pal! How to lose customers and influence nobody - if you buy tickets for a boat show - what the hell DO YOU EXPECT TO SEE? I doubt I'll resubscribe next year!

Really? well give me a call and maybe we can discuss?

0203 148 4283.

Spoke to many readers today all happy to give feedback, as i said happy to discuss over the phone if you wish.

All I said was what did you expect to see there and what were your expectations thats all.

Well I have read all of the above and I fail to see what I have said wrong? but more importantly how does my comment of the show affect your decision to subscribe or not to one of our magazines?

Sorry, but who is Richard Shead? He seems to be (rather aggressively) telling everyone who expresses some degree of disappointment with the EC show that their expectations were wrong.

So I'm wondering about going along tomorrow. Should I or should I not?

It sounds like there aren't too many shiny boats to gawp at. What about other kit? What should I expect, Mr Shead? If it is the overcrowded and overheated EC of old, then I'm not wildly enthusiastic. But if it is just chandlery, the I'm not sure I need to pay an entrance fee.

Richard is Marketing Manager of Motor Boat and Yachting - he is entitled to his opinion - my advice would be to save your money but 65% of those who have currently taken part in the poll think it was worth the effort so if you go with the majority I hope you have a nice day.

I am the marketing manager for IPC Marine Media and amongst many other things look after the exhibition presence for all our titles which includes ybw.com.

In short I have probably attended every boat show throughout the world including allatf ExCel and many at Earls Court.

I am not going in to the in's and outs of what show to go to but ask your self what do you expect to see at this show? there are two shows run by the BMF each year this is an independent show that has try to capture what Earls court used t be, whether they have achieved this is up to the visitor to decide.

You will find a cross section of exhibits there and some good bargains as well. You will also find some excellent features that you will-never find at Excel or sbs (as they dont have the room).

But you will not go into EC and find what was there before, its a different show and always will be. I have no idea if you should spend you money on getting in, only you can decide, but if you are that worried then PM or read the comment made by others and then make your choice.

Richard, a very balanced response I too have had the (mis)? fortune to attend almost every international boat show around the world on business, but I think you have identified the problem in your post, you say

this is an independent show that has try to capture what Earls court used t be,

and then

But you will not go into EC and find what was there before, its a different show and always will be.

James spent a lot of time talking about putting the show back into boat show and capturing the past - i think he has failed to do this and you appear to agree with me.
