When transiting locks recently have you been handed an EA leaflet about the speed and wash campaign?
Full lock downstream at Cookham on Sunday afternoon. I was near the front but before we were half way down the Cliveden reach the rest had all left me well behind.
I was really touched to find them all waiting for me to catch up when I got to Boulters !![]()
For anyone that hasn't seen it, I've attached it here.
Not attached ? I think the commonly accepted 5knts is Broom owners only, who claim they cannot control their boats at 4.3knts![]()
It was MBY or MBM that did a test some years ago and came to the conclusion that under 5 knots the Broom they were testing did not have sufficient steerage. Having owned a 35 European, and an Ocean 37. I totally agree with them for full directional control 5 knots is needed.
I'm still nonplussed as to why the speed limit was set in Kilometers P.H.
its the wash that should be policed, forget the speed which should just be an advisory, there is too much variation in boat type for a blanket speed limit to be effective.
I said as much to John Redmond even before the rule came in, I also pointed out that the original "5K" signs would be read as Knots. He more or less shrugged and said that the signs had been ordered by Bristol with no consultations.
On Monday 12 August we launched our 2 week proactive speed and wash campaign ‘easy does it, don’t make waves.’ During the campaign lock staff will be talking to boaters about the 8 km/h speed limit (equivalent to a fast walking pace) and the effects of excessive wash, all boat owners passing through the locks will receive a campaign leaflet. Patrol crews will also aim to visit all commercial operators with posters and campaign leaflets, this work will continue after the lock side campaign. The enforcement team will increase speed enforcement operations during the campaign using laser guns.
I would estimate it would cost about £100 to buy sufficient 6" sticky letter N's to attach to the 5K signs which could be attached by the lockies or patrols for nothing. Seems like a cheap fix for a bureaucratic c**k up.
Bit puzzled by this as there are no 5K signs that I am aware of. The signs on all lock gates are 8km/h.
