How do you book these - just arrive & ask the lock keeper, phone the particular lock in advance, or other method? I had heard there was a central booking number but nobody answered it.

I thought there was an answerphone on TVM, so sumat's wrong.
Some locks are still monitored by the Lockie and he'll be happy to take your money. Certainly the Osney lock moorings are.

TVM moorings cover a lot of moorings near locks (ie the ones at Abingdon by the pump out), but not the actual lock keepers moorings (ie Abingdon lock keepers island next to the lock).

You can still book some moorings on the actual locks in advance, as we have done for our holiday next week (Abingdon, Days Lock and Goring Lock). You will need to call the lock keepers direct to do this, but forget the new central number, as that is useless.

The whole matter of moorings on the Thames is a complete and utter blurry shambles.
It's difficult to know how things can be improved, given that:-

  • EA owned moorings are split into two-
  • Moorings on the lock (ring the lockie direct)
  • Moorings near the lock (contact TVM)
  • Moorings downstream of Henley bridge are managed by a very nice man in a blue launch who takes your money without hassle in a reasonably painless and pleasant way...
  • Moorings owned by other riparian owners (contact the cowboy outfit)

How the expletive deleted is the 'occasional boater' supposed to work out who to contact without being near the sign saying who to contact? This doesn't help when the last mentioned 'provider' implies that you'll be exterminated if you dare to step off your boat to read what the terms are.

I get angered because the River is becoming slightly unpleasant to use. Traffic is declining and if boaters think they can't stop overnight without being hassled or ripped off then it will decline further.

Tricky as to how these people will get your personal details, as GDPR has made things a bit dicey for anybody passing your personal details on to third parties :encouragement:

I did mean the actual lock moorings, not the EA 24 hours/TVM type moorings. So is there a list of telephone numbers to do as ThamesS23 has noted above? (Thanks for the replies though).
