E Borders petition - will you sign up?

Well I signed it but I don't expect it will achieve much. I recently signed one calling for Gordon Brown to resign but he's still there.

I suspect that drawing this matter to the attention of the Supreme Soviet would only encourage them to give the 'rich yachties' a hard time.

Signed FWIW. These petitions are intended to create th eimpression of "voter participation" but are always completely ignored. You need a champion like Joanna Lumley - perhaps Dee or Dame Ellen, even so, we will get about as much sympathy as Fox Hunters did from this Govt.

Perhaps you could request the same conditions as Dame Ellen? You agree to 24/7 surveillance on your boats - but get paid by sponsors and a title? Not a bad deal perhaps? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Problem is, we are the unwitting sufferers of the law of unintended consequences. The whole e-borders thing has nothing to do with yotties, but to leave us out would leave a theoretic loophole.

None of the e-borders initiative will do what they say it is going to do, but that is of little relevance to the power-hungry list makers.

As I have said before, it's all bollox.

Yup, signed but very sceptical it will have any effect. I will be voting Libdem in the coming elections as they are the only party who have said they will NOT implement eborders.

I tried to sign, got the email, but as usual when I clicked the link got a web page error 404 page not found. Why is that?

It's frustrating, I can never sign a petition as I always get the same thing on their links.

I have signed but also presume it will have no effect. The confusion in the minds of those responsible for the requirements capture is alarming. E is electronic which is any means apart from direct voice and cans with string. I.e. phones, SMS messaging, email would all satisfy that requirement. They seem confused as to what Internet is. It is actually a wide area network derived from Arpanet in the 70s. Email and the web are applications using Internet as the communications medium. Hence when they say we must use Internet they are talking rubbish! They presume we will have full time Internet access when having to leave Braye in a hurry because the wind is shifting to the North. They are utterly ignorant of our needs and safety requirements.

jt - they don't assume that we have internet access, they literally didn't think about us. They are more interested in the the plane and ferry traffic - we have just become an unexpected irritant.

Like many I have lost faith in this, like may other aspect of this government. From replies I have had to petitions I have supported it's main purpose seems to be as a training ground for government spin doctors rather than a genuine public consultation venue.

I here what everyone on here is saying BUT Ithink we need to make some noise.

We’ve got to rely on the RYA to do something and it seems they are . The more noise the better. IF we don’t make a case then we will be ignored and can’t complain afterwards. At least this way we mey get something done.

To just ignore this and not take part would IMO be foolish. I know the RYA do not have the best reputation for doing anything but they are ALL we have to represent us. The BMI do not represent the boating public and they would make money by providing all the new connectivity products we would need to comply.

So get your friends to sign up – It can’t do any harm and may do some good.

I have an even more cynical view of petitions. Think Chinese Cultural Revolution. Mao invites the Chinese people to put forward ideas on reforming the political system and then, when these people put their heads above the parapet, there are mass arrests and the progressive elements are carted off to corrective training centres.

I have signed up and have asked others to. Now the petition has been started, we have to make sure it is signed by as many people as possible. If it only gets a few hundred names that will be taken by the authorities as a sign that the RYA is making a fuss about nothing.
