e-Book readers - any good?

I have read literally (ha!) hundreds of free books, my Kindle has paid for itself many times over. About 5% of them have been disappointing, but it doesn't matter if they are free.

Agreed. Kindles seem to run for weeks - remarkable

It's the e-ink technology. Whereas a tablet uses power to run the screen, a Kindle only uses power when the screen changes.

Thanks all, looks like something I should be looking at serously.

It is not boat speed that is the issue, it is getting all those books on and off as we are on a swing mooring!

Advantage of the KOBO is that it's not locked to Amazon, so you can store any PDF's, magazine downloads etc on it. I have maintenance manuals on mine alongside the books.

Kindles are not 'locked' to Amazon. On mine I have lots of other books from e.g. Gutenburg and files received from friends. I have a PDF version of my Yanmar 1/2/3GM manual (any one who wants a copy, PM me).

There is a good bit of free software called Calibre, that converts formats and will load onto the Kindle.
