what has happened to e/bay everything seems to be buy it now whats happened to the online auction site has it gone for ever ior is it just the time of year
On the left hand side of the screen you can tick for auction only. There does seem to be a lot of Buy Nows - perhaps traders are trying to reach a wider customer base - can't blame them.
I don't think it's the time of year; over recent years there has been a steady decline in auction format sales.
There are more mini-chandlers and fewer private individuals disposing of their unwanted kit, just as you may have noticed that boat jumbles now have less jumble and more commercial vendors.
I can only assume that we are all sufficiently affluent that we can't be bothered to list our old gear and we'd rather buy new stuff than someones cast-offs.

Many small sellers are fed up with eBay as the listing prices have gone up dramaticaly this year as well as many new unfair rules. Along with the Final Valuation Fees and then the Fees for receiving payment eg. PayPal.(sellers are not aloud to use Google Check out which is half the cost in fees) It has become very difficult for small sellers. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
A lot of small sellers have moved to eBid similar to eBay but where it is FREE to list and sell /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://uk.ebid.net/
Some have set up there own websites like Boat Parts and Spares, who are selling a lot of ex stock and good secondhand boat parts. http://www.boatpartsandspares.co.uk/
Some great bargains to be had if you look outside eBay.
Totally agree with that. Ebay seems to have decided that it would rather be an online shopping mall than an auction site and has moved away from it's original position. Private sellers cannot afford to list stuff any more especially if it is gear that is unlikely to attract a lot of interest.
Ebid has a long way to go before it becomes a true alternative but may well do so if enough people start listing and using it. It took a hell of a long time for Ebay to get going.
Actually the eBay listing costs have gone down dramatically. A listing is now 20p. As a result the number of items listed under boat accessories has nearly doubled in the past few months from around 5000 to nearly 9000.
The cost of selling on eBay is high but at least it is now charged on the sale rather than the listing.
But the original poster was commenting on the demise of auction sales and he's right. Some vendors offer auctions on their new products but it's not the same. There just doesn't seem to be the interest in auctioning off used, servicable but surplus gear to the benefit of buyer and seller.
Slightly off subject, the trend is towards virtual shopping malls. Soon you'll be able to park your virtual car, walk through the entrance of a giant virtual mall and browse in dozens of virtual shops. One-stop shopping without ever leaving home.
AS ever E-Bay is a mixed bag, some good deals some bad. It can be a good source and some of the fixed price deals are still good compared to the alternatives. It's like buying anywhere, do your research first so that you do recognise the bargain when it's there. Personaly I watch the auctions very carefully, because there are too many people who will still bid too high despite the same thing beig available fixed price for less from the same seller sometimes.

Please no disrespect - but don't you do Buy It Now on Ebay ? It's not a complaint or judgement ... just a comment. (Must admit I am tempted by your Bilge Mate ! purely cause my new float switch is only just workable in the bilge height I have ..)
Yes, we sell a substantial amount on eBay - there is a Salty John eBay Shop and always a lot of 7 and 10 day listings as well.
We only do Buy-it-Now. A couple of years ago we stopped running auctions because we don't sell used gear. Occasionally we sell off old stock and will sometimes use auction format for that.
Absolutely Ebay seem to lost the plot and forgotten who are their customers from which they make money from - which are the sellers. So they have changed the rules to favour buyers!!! This coupled with Ebay's reluctance to properly police the rules to get rid of the small number of deliberately fraudulent buyers and sellers, have made it increasingly difficult for small sellers. So yes I use buy it nows, rather than auctions like I used too
There is "Steve " from Hull who buys up, bargin Raytheon / Raymarine on auction, then re-sell as "Buy it Nows" @ inflated prices. if they dont sell just re-list, easy init

[/ QUOTE ]To be fair there are a lot of stupid buyers out there on E-Bay, and why not give them what they want.
Have to agree, many times I look at gear on there and then trawl the online sites for average real price. It's shocking sometimes what people will pay and with no g'tee as well.
The matter that I think brings into question ebay is the Feedback fiasco. Personally I don't think any restriction should be on either side - if buyer is a sh** then seller should be able to say so, if seller is a sh** then buyer should be able to say so ... but now it's rubbish - it means nothing. I also think that a second bite of the apple should be available if item fails short time later but feedback has already been left, seller refuses to act. Present system - you cannot leave supplemental feedback.
