Evening all,

Have been following a couple of items on e bay. Every bid is marked as 'Private Listing' should I be suspicious as to who is bumping up the price?

How can I get privately listed?

As ever many thanks for all replies.

I wouldn't worry about private listing as a mechanism of running up the price - so long as you have your own price ceiling in mind (and stick to it) then it shouldn't matter. Sadly, if someone wants to artificially run the price up then they could just get their mates to do it anyway. Or have multiple e-bay identities. I get irritated by it, but we always have the option to walk away. Personally, so long as the item is cash on collection or protected by Paypal then I'm not too fussed.

Private Listing is one of the options open to the seller when listing the item. I can't see that it particularly helps buyer or seller (though clearly it does to someone!) .

Depends on what the seller is selling!
I mean, would you bid on that nice pink bodystocking with matching suspenders and fishnet stockings if your Ebay user id was something like " WellHard Man" or "MachoBloke123"? You probably wouldn't want your wife to know you were bidding on such items, especially if she is a petite size 8 and the item being bid on was a size 18-20!!!

You do have a point :o

Or you are nicking the stuff you are selling from work and don't want the boss to know what you've nicked.

I've just finished bidding on (and won) a private listing.
I did wonder why it was private but in the end decided I didn't really care all that much and just got on with it.

Surely it also prevents you finding out what others have paid FOR THE SAME ITEM previously. This can be very useful in deciding how much to bid with sellers who have multiple identical items to sell but list them one at a time.

I don't think so, Vic.
I've just gone onto eBay now, didn't log in and searched for the item I won recently. There it is. It shows the price I won it for, the date it was listed and ended and how many bids were placed.

The only thing that seems to be missing is my username listed as the winner (not even sure it'd show that normally since eBay stopped showing usernames of bidders) and the names of those I bid against.

Doesnt bother me-I decide what I am prepared to pay;wait until its 5 seconds to go and put in my bid always adding obscure £s and pence just in case its close.
I never let anyone know I am interested or bid early.
As a result everything I get I get for a price with which I am happy.
