Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner ?

Hi,

Thinking of buying a Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner for use on the boat, car and at home and wondered whether anyone here uses one and how well they get on with it ? I don't intend to use it offshore or anything so am not bothered about the ability to recharge from 12V. Any ideas of which Dyson cordless best suits ?

We have a couple of Dyson V6 Animals at home. They work well with the motorised head for floors, but if you put the little nozzle on the suction is fairly pathetic. I've seen the Mobitronic PowerVac by Waeco recommended a few times, and have considered buying one for the boat. At around £50, it's a lot cheaper than the Dyson.
 
Yes - DC59 (also goes under the name V6). This is really powerful. We use one on the boat and at home instead of a mains vacuum and it does as good a job as the mains one.

Only thing - battery life. There's a boost button on the back. Inevitably I use this all the time. If you do this, the run time is only about 10 minutes. About 20 mins on normal running.
 
A good cordless vacuum cleaner is much more useable than a big corded unit. It means we now use it a couple of times a day around the house/car/garage/boat rather than twice a week for the big monster that lurks in the under stairs cupboard. As to whether a dyson is the one to buy is up to you. I have had a DC35 which needed a new battery after 5 years (£50), and now have a V6. Owning a dyson is a bit like owning apple products. A bit like Marmite. Love em or hate em. Discuss.

I'd agree that Dyson products have for years attracted the sort of irrational fervour from owners which we also see from Citroen owners, Nasa owners, etc. I've always found the mains-powered Dysons to be incredibly unfriendly to use, not to mention unreliable. We have a couple of Miele cylinder vacs at home, and they are fantastic, as well as being virtually bullet-proof. But for a quick whiz-around, we got the Dyson V6 Animals, and they're fine for what they do, and very convenient. But the suction isn't great, so we use the Mieles for serious stuff.
 
SWMBO whips around after the dog twice a day with the cordless Dyson - it's brilliant. Got one on the boat too; ideal and quick. Henry was binned at home.

As mentioned in that thread I bought a refurbished DC34. The DC05 I'd owned for 15 years before we moved aboard took up way too much room. The DC34 has been a far better idea. Not super-powerful but good enough. I understand the newer ones are much better. And you could certainly buy 12v chargers for the DC34...
 
We have a V6 at home. We don't use it for a full house clean, but it is ideal for cleaning crumbs etc. off the kitchen floor, sucking up dead flies from windowsills and similar jobs. It is also very good for stairs. I have taken it to the boat, where it did what was required, and I have also used it in the car. Because of our pattern of use we have yet to run the battery down.
 
If you have a modern Makita cordless drill then the battery will fit this

Mine gives 30 minutes cleaning and is ideal for boat/small crevices etc but not really for a whole house.

If you have no battery then the Makita replacement is prohibitively expensive, plus a charger is needed; eBay sellers supply both (generic) for about £50
 
Bought a DC59 6 months ago: gets used a lot more at home now than the old home Henry. Also used in car and on boat, generally very pleased except with the cost. Only minor irritation poor design for removing the dust collector.
 
We bought the latest Dyson cordless, the suction power is rated as the same power as the corded version and it's flipping good. The powered head is very good but not as powerful or big as the corded one. The whole package is good enough for our house and we gave the Dyson corded one away. The rechargeable unit goes to the boat with us.
 
We have the DC34 car and boat, fantastic for quick boat usage. It is stored in a locker which had a 12 V socket, so it is always charged.
 
Just bought the V8 Dyson, after lots of arcing and smells in the old DC08... Amazing, and will try it aboard over the winter. AS a dedicated boat hoover I bought a RIng 12v Cig lighter job several years back for about £18 allegedly wet as well as dry, but that is excellent for the sailing season.

V6 cordless and corded versions on both boat and at home. Cant believe I've paid the price for them all but, having tried a multitude of cheaper brands, there's no comparison.

I do much more hoovering now the cordless is so handy and, every now and then, I get the 240V job out.
 
'....Henry was binned'. Curiousw, we went the other way. The cordless Dyson worked well when it worked,. But kept breaking. It needed new batteries within a few months,. The switches played up, and it was very unreliable. It was binned' in favour of a Henry,. But Mrs still wants a useable cordless as she has to wait for me to come off the boat to get it upstairs! Any recommendations?

Mrs Maxi a retired professional housekeeper will not have a Dyson in the house because of their reliability problems. We currently use Gtech cordless cleaners and she is very happy with them. Not cheap but reliable and they do what it says on the tin
