Hi all, Just installing a used relay/regulator setup and starting side is ok [i think] . When running i get 14ish volts when i test the D+ to ground but when testing across the battery it's 12v
Now, there is what looks like a broken wire in the regulator and not sure how the charge lamp connects, if it does. Using my original panel and starter switch
here's a few pics, I'll highlight the broken wire and also can someone confirm where I've indicated with an arrow where this should connect. In the loom i bought it seems the yelle/green when to the starter switch but i thought this was ground.

I think not. I guess the thick copper wire you are soldering on, is intended to take the full dynamo output. Your wire won't take that. The dynostart regulator boxes I knew had 3 coils (cutout, voltage regulator and starter relay). You have a seperate starter relay and then the cutout and regulator, which is the box you have shown. Before taking on a repair I suggest you check out how they work. An explanation I quite like is at:-
How the Lucas voltage regulator works • Matchless Clueless

However I suggest you go electronic, for £70/80. Google for dynamo regulators to look for suppliers.
Depending on how you wish to go, you could consider fitting an alternator. This would by pass the danger of spending on a regulator then having to repair the dynostart, itself.
You don't say which engine you have. If you fit an alternator and your engine is small you might run into overload problem. This is where the engine starts; and on speeding up, the alternator cut in which takes all the power the engine has. So you end up with an engine which starts OK but can't get above idle speed.

engine is a little Sabb 8hp so no room for an alternator.

I hadn't soldered anything in that pic, just drawn a red line. I thought the thinner part that had broken may have been used as a fuse. I've soldered in a little piece of 20amp fuse wire to see what happened and when I done that I got charge flowing to the battery. I'll see how it goes. Just seen I can get a bosch electronic regulator for a Beetle for £35. Might order one and keep it in the store for a backup.
