Arrive in the drizzel wet tierd and still have someone come along for money,a lot, cold mist rolls in, a sub mac donalds dizmal cafe serving cold chips and hydrogenised fat bergers is the only outlet in the area,no alcohol afordable no one to talk to.

Go below look for a a book peel the pages apart light the heating, its June the rain pattering by now on deck and there for the rest of the evening.Another typical miserable day, another miserable town.

The economicaly chalenged boat sheltering from the heat and new rich expenese

Should i watch a well watched video on a small 80 euro 3 hour AA battery time/ 12v or local TV? could i manage a small sat dish 12 inch?? ashore and transfer the signal? no it would be stolen there

Can any TV signal be captuered on a boat at anchor?? Near shore

Try cooking food - heats cabin albeit with condensation - gives you a wam feeling having paid so little for so much! Then read a book - not much cost. Book swapping is a great way to meet people, have a dram or two and maybe get invited for a meal with someone who is , trying to warm the cabin with some condensation thrown in etc. etc.!!!

Why not buy a DVD recorder and a digibox? You might not be able to record anything, but you can spend lots of time trying to get it to work when the telly's crap.

a didgi box! the eec has made sure we pay taxes everywhere but services such as TV are strictly kept within Contrys boreders

Last year i recorderd lots of programs from BBC prime the only then free station i could find its now pay and my girl friend is so angry shes changed provider but that will have ITV 5 &6??!

Im told English chanells are free to air but need a sat dish which needs to be land based! Now wi-fi??But then all id need is power to run a laptop!

Sat dish isn't that hard to line up with a couple of cheap bits of kit , a hand bearing compass to get the er , direction to point , and aim close to the horizon then tilt slowly up till you get the signal , or use something to tell you the exact angle you're at . The position of each satelite is on the net

Trouville,

whatever others might think about it, TV was almost an absolute priority for me.

I fitted a Triax UFO aerial, and a Samsung 23" LCD TV.

In it;s own right, this combination picks up whatever TV channels are available... Spanish in Spain, and Portuguese in Portugal.

I also fitted a car entertainment system... A JVC with FM/DVD/CD players... this is plugged into 4the TV and 4 Kef Egg speakers.

I have since connected a Slingbox to Janets' broadband system, plugged the aerial in, and connected it to her Sky+ box.

Using wifi on the boat, I can now watch and control UK TV including the full Sky package. At the moment I watch it on the PC, but I will also be able to connect the PC picture and sound to the TV and speaker system.

This little lot cost about £1500, and there is a monthly cost of wifi on the boat, plus Janets' broadband and Sky subscription, (but she would have these anyway, and I would have wifi anyway, so these arent real costs).

In fact, I wonder how many people would subscribe if you you could connect to wifi, and watch UK TV on the PC.

That new box only allows one person to conect from anywhere where theses internet. For me to use that id have to buy/rent a house in the UK pay a subscription buy a TV put on the phone and ADSL subscribe to the electric company pay local taxes for rubbish water even if not used,All that puts such a box out of my reach!

I was looking at a 10 inch LCD TV that has been reduced from 200 euros to 99 euros where as the DVD players full price start at 80 euros.Last year i copied BBC prime programs not a big choise as a few programs are endlessly repeated,Dads army keeping up aperances, ive discovered i dont really want to watch dads army for the third time!!!

I bought about 20 DVDs when they cost 5 to 10 euros now the offers start at 12 euros the twenty inclued Robert altmans films but 20 DVDs would soon become boreing

I did have a tv on board a few years ago and i never watched it becouse there either wasent a signal or nothing worth watching?

Perhaps the DVD is the best choise as with luck there will be some English chanels ITV 5 i think? and i can record something from there???

Of course when i will be anchord in a bay ill be to far away from a signal! Then sat only, but arnt they closeing analog sat?? Digital is very hard to set up!

Amazingly the supermarket which had the camping sat set dosent sell sat dished any more!!I will have to go hunting in the wild jungels of shopping centers!!

I have a laptop on board which interfaces to the GPS when sailing, plays DVDs in the evening, connects to WIFI in marinas, and is generally useful as a PC at other times.

Oh dear! You really ought to get out more. Even living mainly in England I find it difficult to find much worth watching on tv, I certainly don't bother when on board either home or abroad, I certainly wouldn't pay what seems like an awful lot of money to watch trash. But then I never take a computer on board either.

Re: DVD player or TV which ?for onboard entertainment in boreing wet p

The TV was an 7 inch not 10 inch and now costs 199 euros again!!I wont be watching TV either!

The laptops great but my batteries dont think much of it nor do my solar panels when its grey and wet!!

I looked more closly at the DVD player one neede 2.5 amps another 1.5 amps a lot but might just go say 5 amps drain on a wet windy day.

Re: DVD player or TV which ?for onboard entertainment in boreing wet p

I recently bought a digital TV USB receiver, which comes complete with aerial, usb extension lead & remote control for about £30 (www.tvstick.co.uk) It works very well on my laptop (after downloading the updated driver & driver instructions from the website). The aerial comes with a magnetic base, and should be stuck on something big & metallicy for amplification. Optionally, use an extra USB extension lead to get a bit of height. I also bought one for my girlfriend, who lives in Switzerland, and it works well for her there too. So with the DVD player on the laptop, and the aerial, I've got it all with one appliance.

Hope this helps. (Obviously I have no connection with the vendor, just a customer)

I knew there would be a few people who have no interest in TV and media entertainment, but it's horses for courses surely.

Trouville asked a question and I've got a variety of solutions, (most picked up from people here... so I'm not alone),... from which he can pick and mix, (or dismiss), as he wishes.

At home in the UK most people have TV's and entertainment systems, and millions subscribe to Sky.... not sure why everything about one's lifestyle should change when you step aboard a yacht.

I certainly dont watch it all the time.... but it's handy to have when there's something I want to watch, or if I'm at a loose end.

It's also helped to encourage Janet towards coming with me to "Live The Dream", as it were. I'm also sure that it would be good for people with kids.

Not everybodies cup of tea, but there are lots of things that arent my cup of tea.

Cheers

<g> In reality, I dont do much sailing. Having bashed around the UK for years, and done trips from UK to Lexioes and Madeira and recently Lagos, I actually find a lot of sailing either a bit too much of a challenge, or tedious, so dont want to be at it all the time.

What I like is the ability to live where I want for a while, then up sticks and move on. The day sailing we do when we are settled, along with the trips to the next destination, suit me just fine.

I'd guess that most people who live on their boat are very similar..... although I dont actually live on Rogue until next month.

Cheers

i agree TV or DVD is great sometimes when its raining cold and anchored off the evening setting in.

I bought a TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to a junk shop to see if they had any shorts, they dident but had just got a 3 in 1 radio casset and B&W TV! And its working now, draws just over 1 amp really clear pic being B&W its easier to watch than my old casio colour set.

B & W but just what i needed dident cost 199 euros but 15 euros!! Paid cash!

The damp dreary summers looking better i can use an old CD player and tape adapter just have to burn some CDs.

An entertainment center in one go.

If you are buying a DVD player to watch things you have recorded yourself you have to be careful as they don't all play all types of disks. some cheaper ones only play prerecorded DVDs. The more expensive ones will play all types including DVD-RW and DVD+RW.

Re: DVD player or TV which ?for onboard entertainment in boreing wet p

I wondered about that when today i saw one "boss" dvd for 99 euros and another much neater not so much plastic around the screen but otherwise the same screen for 199 euros and the list of things it could do were far longer including CDs and games.

I intended copying my "bought"CDS as my girlfriend has a dvd recorder as the life of audio CDs aboards already a challenge for them

Have a look at this TV I saw in Dixons. It has a buillt in DVD and both digital and analogue tuners so it is future proof.....

Most important is that it has a 12V transformer to step mains voltage down to 12v which is the voltage the TV uses. I would presume that you could dispense with the transformer and run it straight from the battery. Don't just buy one, check the details with the shop I could be wrong.
