Duty Free Goods? - Cruising south of Brest

'Ship's Stores' still has a meaning for customs officers. When entering Canada we were stacked to the gunwhales with cheap grog from the USA. The Canadian authorities have a somewhat puritanical view of booze. The explanation that the floating bodega was for personal consumption on board and not for import was agreed without demur.

For anyone who has watched that video you might be interested to know that she was 39 and he is in his early 40's when that film was made. It is extraordinary as they both look like they are in their 60's. I can only assume that the premature raging is the result of smoking.

Usually premature raging is when a smoker runs out of supplies mid ocean... But yes, I think most of that is the smoking, and the rest is exposure to all those UV rays without even a thought of sunscreen. Nothing better for you back then than a healthy tan!

Think Eric died of lung cancer in NZ at a relatively young age. Susan lived into her 80s on the Isle of Wight.

Duty free goods.

We took some when we left for a trip to Brazil in 1990, in a 33-footer.
We were starting from Portishead, a few miles from Avonmouth, where there are ships suppliers and a custom house, so it was easy to organise. We had to put a padlock style hasp on a locker, then customs came with the supplier, and put a lead seal on it, and told us not to break the seal until we were outside of the 12 mile limit.
Two points stick in my mind.
One was that the allowances were very generous, being based on the crew numbers, multiplied by the length of the voyage in days, and a daily ration of about a pint of spirits and several packets of cigarettes per person per day! We could only find room for a couple of crates of scotch.
The other thing was that one of the customs people told us, as they left, that they were entitled to charge a big fee for attending, which would have wiped out any saving! I think that they only came out of curiosity, and to get out of the office.
