This summer (when it gets here) we fancy visiting the delights of the Nederland inland waterways. All seemed straightforward until it dawned on me that the stick on wild Thyme stands a lot higher than any previous yacht I've owned at 17m (including VHF antenna). - that stated me hunting on line for some guidance. So far, no joy, so I've come to the fount of all knowledge. Would some kind forumite point me in the direction of reliable guidance on the available air draft under the bridges (and power lines) in that country, please?

The ANWB Wateratlas Staande Mastroute (ISBN 978 90 18 03815 1) is worth having. It used to be available as a free map at ANWB shops, but we couldn't find one last year, so had to buy the book, about 20 euros.

Thanks Sailorman and Dan, Staande Maastroute Atlas already on the shopping list, but what if we want to go off the route?

Thanks also to MoodySabre. I'm not known for planning much in advance, but I'd sooner have an idea whether she will fit before getting within Mk. I eyeball range.

full dutch enc charts are a free download.
have a look on the open cpn site for links

Presumably you will be getting the chart folios? They have air clearance heights shown. My strategy is usually to ask the locals, Havenmmeester or other yachties. They are usually happy to help. What area are you aiming for?
Depth could be more of an issue than height.

Open CPN is all new to me, have to get y thinking head on to deal with new fangled ideas, but many thanks - that should be a great experience.

Yes we will be getting folios, but prefer not to fork out first, then find the boat won't fit! Perhaps 17m clearance is universal and I'm worrying unnecessarily - never had problems with 12,5m air draft on visits with previous yachts Outline plan is in at Vlissingen and work our way North to Amsterdam and as far beyond as time, weather and inclination take us. She's a shared boat, so crew (and skipper) swaps will happen, and she may be left alone on occasion. As I implied earlier, I'm not known for making detailed plans, preferring to go with the flow.

Thanks for everyone's help.

we done the mast up route last yr with 16m air draft, no issues
we locked out at Stelledam & went up the outside on the hottest in The Netherlands for many yrs with an easterly breeze, a wonderful day
download open cpn download the charts & put then in a folder then tell open cpn where that charts folder is stored, job done

We sneaked under the fixed bridge at Roompot with 20m air draft. The main issue is being unable to get into some of the leisure locks you go into the commercial ones where barge skippers seem to hold themselves to the wall with side thrusters which can push you into the opposite wall if unaware. We are hoping to do the Stand mast route this summer assuming the route is clear.

All sounds promising - much encouraged by Wingdiver's reply, gives us 3m to spare Water draft is 1.68m, otherwise known as 6' - didn't envisage great problems with that having done a fair bit of Dutch cruising with 5' 6" previously.

I will have to get my computer head on and sort this OpenCPN stuff, but not tonight - just feeling a comfortable glow from the Chardonnay.

Thanks again to all.

May be irrelevant to you but--
I have been contributing to the My Hanse Forum, as I had hoped to go further north than Amsterdam this year.
I have been asking Dutch contributors for info.
It seems that the canal at Alphen a d rijn may be shut for a while in June for bridge repairs but dates not confirmed
Currently confirmed dates for closures are 10-20 may

Thanks Daydream Believer - I'll keep an eye out for info on that.

Thanks also to both Rogers for their kind offers by PM.

Have a look at http://www.anwb.nl/water/varen/producten/waterkaarten-app (use Google translate)

This is the electronic form of
. If you have access to an iPad or Android device, you might find the app useful. The outlay is fairly modest and you get all the information you need.

Having said that, there is no substitute for local knowledge and I have yet to meet an unhelpful person in the Netherlands ..... :)
