Hi,
Looking to leave the Yacht in Dunstaffnage Bay prior to cruising around the Isle of Mull in the summer, if we get one!! Does anyone know who administers the swinging moorings in the bay as there is no mention of them on teh Marinas website.

I am pretty sure that some of the moorings in Dunstaffnage Bay were there before the marina existed. However, I think that the marina may own or control some of the moorings so, as others have said, phone them up and ask.

The moorings in Dunstaffnage Bay are individually owned and they are managed by the Dunstaffnage Bay Mooring Owners Association (DBMOA). Typically, they are not available for short term rental. The Marina owns (or used to own) four of these moorings and if you call them, they may allow you to use one for a few weeks, however I am sure that they would prefer to rent you a pontoon berth!
Connel has a mooring association (moorings next to the bridge) and there is the Cardingmill Bay Moorings association which has moorings oppsite the sailing club in Oban bay. WHAMA http://www.whamassoc.org.uk/ has mooring association contacts and by phoning around, you might find someone that will allow you use of a mooring for a short term rent.
Finally, the marina on Kerrera also has moorings and is worth trying. Car parking, ferry across the bay etc make the logistics more challenging.

Alternatively and not so far away, there are mooring for short term rent at Ardfern. You might also try Crinan Boatyard, or British Waterways who have pontoon berthing available at Bellanoch a short way into the Crinan Canal, Kilmelford , Ardoran Marine or Loch Linne moorings ( not sure of the name of the business, but there is a boatyard with moorings.)

Crinan would be by far and away my choice for a mooring as it is simply beautiful there and the folks at Crinan Boats are very welcoming as well as skilled at sorting out any boatie problems you might have.

All of the above are as close as one and other for a trip round Mull.

Bellanoch involves being restricted to canal operating times for locking out through the sea lock. This could lose you a day if it didn't chime with the tidal gates at Dorus Mor and the Sound of Luing.

The same tidal gates need the timing considered if you are thinking of Crinan or Ardfern.

Access to Ardoran Marine in Loch Feochan is also dependent on tide. Linnhe marine is a good spot, but it's three hours from there to Lady Rock.

Dunstaffnage or Kerrera are by far the most convenient departure points for a trip round Mull. Another alternative is Oban Bay Berthing's moorings, which are £75 per week. http://www.obanbayberthing.co.uk/

Ye ken weel there are twa ways round Mull... Mibbies he'd like to go south to Islay then to Colonsay, Iona, and then ricochet between Tiree, Mull and Coll then back in through the Sound of Mull instead of ploughing the well worn furrow from Oban?
