I'm contemplating a trip this summer from Dunkerque to La Rochelle and back in 2 weeks time , with my 42 ft mustique, cruising speed is 25kts.
Departure would be on the 30/07 and arriving back on the 15/08 (of the same year!!!) Or am I making a rod for my own back by attempting this, and should I just settle for something like st Malo as the destination? I know fuel prices in France are €€€€€€€= €1/L so stopping by on the channel islands would be saving me some £££££. recomendations are very welcome!!! SWMBO and the 2 kids are comming to so it wont be a race to get there otherwise a sign "for sale" is on it in september!!!

Re: too far ?

Um, that's a long way if you know your crew arent keen on hours of travelling. No less than 4 of your 14 days holidays will be listening to diesel engines for most of the day.

Sounds to me like you have shares in a fuel company and you want the sales to increase.

You can certianly do it if the weather is Ok on the other hand you could get stuck waiting for decent weather to round Brittany on the way there or the way back .

you may well have done this before and prehaps i am trying to teach you to suck eggs ? If not read on .

I am from Guernsey and the cruising on the adjacent Normandy coast and the nort Brittany coast is excellent with many totaly different pots and anchorages but within easy hops of cheap Channel Island Fuel.

On the way here try St Vast la Hougue and Cherbourg if you have not been this way before, Alderney , Dielette and Carteret Into Jersey for cheap Juice then Granville, St Malo, Dinan back to Jersey for a Fill up of Juice, then Dahouet, Binic St Quay Portrieux, Paimpol, les Ardrieux, Ile de Brehat, Pontrieux, Treguier, Perros Guirec, Ploumanach and Trebeurden, Lest Sept Isles and then saving the best to last Guernsey for Cheap Juice ( Shell and Esso Tankers are cheaper) then back again .

This would give you 23 ports in easy cruising some challenging navigation and all within easy reach of cheap Channel Island fuel.

If you want to discuss or get some personal reccomendations give me a PM. Good books are Cumberlidge and the RCN books.

Best of luck
David

I picked up some very dirty fuel last summer in Trebeurden which surprised me in such a modern well used marina

Thats a bit of a trek over 2 weeks especially if the weather doesnt play ball. Even if it does, you'll have 4 or 5 long days to get there and thats maybe not what your family would thank you for. We did the same thing a few years back and got as far as I'le d'Yeu before we turned back
A good destination to aim for would be the Morbihan sea which is definitely worth visiting and there are some offshore islands nearby, Belle Ile, Houat and Hoedic which are also worth seeing but the weather would still have to be settled to get there and back in 2 weeks. f you dont get good weather, then you might have to limit your trip to the N Britanny and Channel Isles which is no hardship anyway

Thanks for all yr comments changed mind, taking the boat by truck from Nieuwpoort to La Rochelle only costs me € 2200 ex vat (transport is cheaper than fuel) and comming back to ostend in 2 weeks instead of going down and up again in a race against time!
so i can start from La Rochelle Full tanks RED joepie !!!!!!!!!!
