My mates 8HP Mariner, fell off the back of his boat, whilst sailing yesterday, luckily, it was held on by a chain, but was well & truly towed for some minutes before recovery.

He hasn't attempted to start it.

Recommendations please.

2 or 4 stroke? In either case (for 2 stroke certainly) take out the plug/s and squirt WD40 into the cylinder and through the carb, so as to 'wash ' out any salty water. A couple of small squirts wont be enough, a whole can is cheaper than a new engine, keep squirting and pulling on the starter cord, wash all the salt out. Drain the petrol from the tank and carb float chamber, wash out with petrol. For a 4 stroke I'd drain and change the oil. When you quite satisfied that all the contaminates are clear replace the plugs, get the motor into a tank, fill it with fresh petrol and try starting it, you may need to remove the plug a couple of times to clean it of the WD40. Keep trying and it will start.

This must all be done now! Yesterday was a good time to do it, next weekend will be too late.

Dunk it in fresh water without delay........ you should have done that ASAP after recovery.

Then then set about draining all fuel and oil if its a 4 stroke. as advised above.

Dont worry about the gear oil.... the gearbox is designed to live and work under water !
