Duncan Yacht Chandlers - Nice Gesture

Largs marina is eye wateringly pricey, but I have always found the chandlery prices to be very reasonable. A wee bit more than online places, but I'm happy to pay that to keep a local place in business. About the same as Duncan's shop too, as far as I can see.

Now if you want expensive, try the Bosun's Locker at Port Edgar. Perhaps all Edinburgh yacht owners really are made of money ...

I wanted 2 tins of Cruiser Uno last year. largs Chandlers would not budge on the price of £160 I got it on line, delivered for £120 I tend to think 30% dearer is a bit more than a wee bit.

Not a mention of Kip Chandlers in this post. Always find Dave and Florence helpful and a bit of twisting of arms can usually get you a discount also as a Kip berther you get a loyalty discount.

Agree with everything said about Duncans and even if you have not been in for a while they still remember you.

Largs chandlers is not owned by marina and do provide a very good service. I seldom fall over the dogs but people do fall over me while I am down stroking them. There is one word which is not in the dictionary there however. "Discount". They treat it as a big sweary word just like I do with that other sweary word "wo*k" being retired I no longer have to be swearing all the time!!!!

Edited as there is always some smart ar*e!!!

Antifouling prices are all over the place. Largs had some jolly good offers on Cruiser last year, and were willing to keep them open for me even after the official end.

They gave me an extremely good price on 30m of 8mm chain last year - substantially less than their price for shorter lengths.

Totally agree about Duncans. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Hey Willie can I get a discount for saying nice things about you?

Agree too about Largs. Good stock and plenty of it, but is a bit expensive. However if you need something quick, it's likely Largs will have it, which can be worth paying extra for at times.

Kip chandlers? The staff are excellent, David in particular. However it seems to me that since the place was rebuilt there isn't nearly enough stock - unlesss you want clothes that is. Most of the floor space is devoted to clothes. I would have thought that it would be more profitable and better for boat owners to do it the other way round and have lots of boat bits and less clothing. We buy boating clothing occassionally, but buy boat bits almost weekly. On several occassions I have had to drive from our home port (Kip) to Largs to get something from Largs chandlers, as it has not been available at Kip.

Last time I went into Duncan's I came out two hundred quid lighter and a pair of Dubarry boots heavier. The french girl in the clothing section is very persuasive.

Persuasive? I would say Natalie has a good personality towards customers, always been pleasent to me.
As for Largs chandlers, the atmosphere is not the same as Duncan's.
Duncan's is definatly the best laid out chandlers I have been in, easy to find stuff, everything well displayed and catagorised.
Their prices are better than I have found anywhere else too, cannot fault them.

I'm not knocking Duncan's, honest, but they are rather titchy. The best chandlers I've been to recently is Force 4 in Bristol, which is several times the size. Duncan's is good for keeping individual bits of marine hardware - shackles, cleats, blocks, that sort of thing - in stock.

hey CW that wasn't my quote

wish i could afford a pair of Dubarrys!

I bought their own brand wellys when i was last there!

For vaguely improbable reasons I have huge calves, and the only cheap seaboots which fit me these days - it was easy to find them ten years ago - are the Lazilas ones, which only Duncan's seems to sell.

One more good experience at Duncan Yacht

We are itinerant Canadian sailors who purchaed several items at Duncan.

Always good service, and rices.

They took back one item that we decided we did not like after they had shipped it to Oban (it was NOT defective) No hassle.

To crown that, I Emailed them from Norway about a dinghy wheel that had failed. They shipped a new one no charge.

If they look after itinerants like that, they probably do better for the locals who are MUCH better repeat business opportunities than we are.

Think you will find that that was under previous ownership? having compared prices extensively over the net, I have found Bosun's fairly competative - especially once you added P&P - and only 15 minutes up the road.
