Dumping used White Spirit

I must remember that for the next time I get one in the loft.

Ooooo, Can I come and do that? I'd love to see how much we could raise the roof. I sort of get this vision of wasps and roof tiles shooting heavenwards, oh and tile shrapnel and dust. lots of it. I could then go home, put my feet up with a glass of scotch and laugh about it, whilst you clear up the mess.

I think you're confusing it with meths. Booze is so cheap these days that the meths drinkers who haven't died have reverted to cheap booze.

I misunderstood and thought you were asking for advice on using it as a laxative. I wouldn't have thought that was a great idea.

I expect many people tip it down the foul or [worse] rainwater drain, or in a corner of the garden.
"it's only a little drop, won't do any harm"
But then you see racks of it in B&Q and Wickes. Hundreds of gallons is bought, I bet that not much of it is disposed of properly.

Thank you everyone, very useful.

How we ended up with wasps is beyond me ! ( No I really do know, lets not start that all over again).

Makes me feel good knowing I'm not the only tightfisted bugger letting white spirit settle and then re-using it. Do the same with acetone too, only that stuff can only be recycled a few times before it sets into a solid block. Such a waste.

Having down sized in house and garden, I no longer have an 'evil' spot at the top corner of the garden to dump used white spirit, emulsion laden water etc.

What do you do that is legal and environmentally safe?

If its non flammable it goes down the drain. Old oil and diesel gets mixed with chain saw chips to make fire lighters for the woodburner - works well. I found in the past that the local dumpit wouldnt take diesel or things like white spirit. "ther arent oil, mate" the yoof said. " more than my jobs worth" he actually continued.

Cant remember the exact details (memory not what it was), but IIRC, its definitely a by-product of the petroleum industry, but can be one of several different chemicals, all labelled generally as "white spirit"

Talk of chucking it over next door's garden reminds me of an eposide a few years back. Talking with my neighbour, I mentioned I was plagued with slugs in my veg patch, and asked how he dealt with them. "I never have any slugs, 'cos I use slug bait" he said. When I asked how come it didn't work for me, he replied, "Well it's bait init, so it attracts the buggers. The trick is that I throw it over into your garden"
