Forgive me for disagreeing but in my opinion there is some great sailing, places to visit, very pleasant quiet anchorages, lots of directions to take, depending on conditions a nice uncrowded, interesting cruising area.
As another member of that club might I suggest you try down as far as Morecambe Bay? - I'm sure you would be welcomed! The Solway is quite trying with its large tides but I know our members enjoy the area visiting all of the spots already mentioned.
Steve, thank you for the heads up - and yes indeed, I am actually considering a round-trip from Conwy up the Cumbrian coast to the Solway and then back via the Isle of Man. What I value is an uncrowded, scenic cruising area with some little ports for a pint in the evening or a pleasant anchorage. And I find the tidal land-/seascape has something to its own, although some early departures are sometimes required.
If you do end up heading for Morecambe Bay let me know - if you can take the ground it is possible to explore up to Arnside in the bay. Otherwise your choises are really limited to Fleetwood, Glasson and around Barrow; the last one being the only one with 24 hour access.

You'll certainly find that. Some of the scenery is excellent. I reckon anyone who thinks it's crap is not brave enough to sail there /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.
You might consider Isle of Whithorn where I live. The harbour dries out, but there is ample depth to anchor in the bay which is sheltered except from the south, with good holding and with easy dinghy access ashore. Two pubs, shop, showers, limited diesel by can, sailing club. Very picturesque. This is a good jumping off point for the Isle of Man, Point of Ayre being only 16 miles, and Peel (afloat all the time) 31 miles.
Cheers, Dave
