dumb questions from a newby about crusing Sardinia.

As an experienced UK charterer I'm venturing into the med for the first time chartering out of Portisco Sardinia in a couple of weeks time.my first fully fledged med charterwhich I'm really looking forward to. I have prepared by buying pilot, charts and sort of know where I want to go around the costa smerelda.

I am a little worried about what happens with the radio as I dont know italian and only have poor french. in particular weather forecasts ( i am told some are available in english - any suggestions for northern Sardinia anyone?) but what happens with entering marinas or putting out / answering distress calls without Italian?

Any other advice or recommendations or personal experience s for a newby much appreciated.

Never realised the sea spoke English.

Presumably, Davy Jones has been teaching it all these years.

Seriously though folx, do remember getting English language forecasts from an Italian station when sailing in the Adriatic. Mind you, they were the same for two weeks and were never exactly right, nor horrifically wrong.

HM offices often put up fax copies of synoptics and forecasts from which you can generally work out wotswot.

Hi we have just had 2 weeks in July in the area you mention. The marinas all have weather forcasts posted and there is a continuous report on VHF, chanels indicated from 16. The forcast rotates between Italian and English.
You are right to keep a close eye on the weather, The first week we were there conditions were idyllic. The second we had part of a Mistral and sat at anchor for 2 days of 30 - 35 knot winds. Beware Portisco charged us 95Euro for one night, the day before it went to 150 Euro A NIGHT! for end July/August.
