I have now put an offer in (subject to) for a Dufour 35 based in Port Napoleon near Marseille.

Couple of questions:

The boat is a 1974 Dufour 35 CC with a Volvo 43hp chug chug.
What are the problems, if any in keeping her French flagged.
I will ask for a VAT receipt but as she is 32 years old is it necessary?

Apart from possible deck problems, is there anything else that this marque has a reputation for, good or bad??

As I am buying into a lifestyle as well as, hopefully, some great sailing. Where is The best place to sail to, from South of France?

If you keep her French flagged you will have to equipe her to French standards = could become very expensive and tedious. If you SSR register her you can do what you like.

You will not be required to show VAT paid on a vessel of that age.

The best place to sail to is anywhere out of the south of France.. Very windy place - lots of gales and unless you turn Right towards Spain very expensive - Balearics are nice except in school holidays - spain is pretty good news generally untio you get to Turkey or Tunisia

if you put on ssr you can do "almost anything" and yes equiping to French standards is expensive, and besides theres lots of French in France so its quite nice to be English, i find SpainEXPENSIVE so i would turn left and head towards Italy which has become very expensive but can be stopped at hear and there for free (2/3 days) try cassis befor april and port cross summer now starts in April and not july as it used to do!
Just enjoy France is very very full but not to expensive yet a place for your boat in april may will cost between £6 to more normally £10/12 pn.
Anyone sailed the French atlantic coast, i proposed going to st-Nazaire-Bordeaux region imaginig that the tides cold and rain would meen it was empty but im told by a Frenchman from Paris its also full and very expensive indeed?????? anyone been there in the last year or two???

Thank you for the info guys.

Anyone actually keep a boat in South of France?
The prices are less than 1/2 of UK South coast marinas, that’s why it’s attractive.

I have been quoted EU 3150 (£2190) for a year, water free & elec at just over £2 per day. I was paying almost that for 6 months winter storage & mooring in Plymouth.

After my experience with moorings I decided to look around for a marina berth on the south coast & its between £3850 to £5890, so it becomes very very doable in France. Even with say 10 return air fares at an average of £100 that’s still well less than a marina in UK.

Ok there are MacDonald’s in the UK & I would have to put up with
French seafood, local wine, hot croissants in the morning & coffee & cognac etc. also all that sun, warm water /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif .....yuk I think I am gona be sick...

for a 11meter boat that sounds cheep. you will find ports such as around sete but the places are taken, are you quoting port Napolian prices,or Port St Louis?
Last year the only port with a yearly place anywhere was the grand motte
Call the port and ask if they have places available

France flagged boat information

You will have to change the flag of the vessel asap, as far as i know: only a french resident or company can own a french boat.

second prob - you need to change it asap because there is annual french tax on the french-flagged boat. argh. For a 75foot boat it's about €11,000 at the moment, so it might be a grand or two or three on a 35 footer.

I used sarnia yachts in guernsey to reregister to P1, nice chap Chris Hole sorted it out.

Re: France flagged boat information

congratulations! I bought two french boats im my time down hear, you must deregister it but you can bring your SSR with you, when you have the bill of sale you go to the powers that be and fill in a form and they will take a copy of the bill of sale and keep the French log book,so remember to make a copy of it for your files.
Im rushing as i have to pay this internet conection!!and my wi-fi card is about to run out!
Be very carful with the place dont just agree to pay the remainder of the mooring agreement that comes with the boat but ask them to send you the agreement for a yearly place in your name.I know many down hear that have bought a boat with the place, only to be told in december they have to go!!!
To have a place for the year they will normaly want a copy of the reg insc and a cheque! then you have your place! Yearly places also come with elec, sometimes its 1/2kw and more or heating or liveaboard costs then extra.
Best to ask now and be sure whats what ask to if your allowed to stay aboard and is there a time limit normally there isent BUT best to ask as a few ports limmit staying aboard to max 3 days but then those are storage ports but still.
I want to buy a folkboat and one was advertised there though i couldent get any details nor price, but anyway this year i may be in port Stlouise with my Hillyard so one way or another we may cross bows i shall cerainly peddle down to where you are as they used to have a useful shop

Trouville hi,

The St Nazaire to Bordeaux/Archchon region is a bit like the Solent/South Coast for French Yachties - stacks of marinas and quite a lot of OK anchorages as well - places to explore and ditch crawl. Stacks of French out there sailing or motoring and a fair few Brits as well.

I live in La Rochelle and the cost for a 10 metre visiting boat is 19 euro a day and I suspect that is pretty general - lots of harbours and maninas will be full in the season if it is a good one - on the up side from from 1st Oct to 31st march its half price = 162 euros a month to winter and a couple of months either side of that is 25% off the standard price........

The really lovely and inexpensive are is the North coast of Spain -

I suspect the posting about the guranteed berth is in for a surprise - Here in LR there is a 5 year waiting list - If you are in your berth at the beginning of the year then you are obliged to pay for the entire 12 months - if you do not you have to pay 2 months 'fine' for giving up the place.. Would not be surprised if that was what was happening with the Med berth...

Thanks for that when i get my folkboat i thought id come down the atlantic coast or up, The north coast of Spain sounds good i heard people going that way loved it
As for the prices sounds about the same as the med. and yes we have to pay on time or else!! Im on a wating list as well for a 9meter boat and ive moved from No9 in 1985 to No4 this year!!!
If you know the ports you can be offerd a place on a yearly basis but its very expensive 3000+ for around 10meters, And why i suggested poter make very sure he can have the place for the year, Origanaly i was in Greece and Italy and thought the price increese and full port problem was just down there so imagin how shocked i was when i got back to France and found everything full!! I only got another place as we live hear normaly i would say it will get better but before when Italy or France was full/expensive everyone went to Greece spain now everywhers full!!!Wunder what will happen??
Pity about the Atlantic coast i was dreaming of empty habours/bays and inexpensive cafes and eateries!!!
