If a vessel has broken its mooring and run aground, who's to say it hasn't been damaged - especially the downward side, which would be very difficult to inspect? Without a survey, if you made the decision to tow it off, without consulting the owner, and it then sunk, who would be to blame?
very good point, I hadn't though of that.
Perhaps I'm being paranoid but still one point remains unanswered though; perhaps I wasnt explicit enough. Lets suppose a salvor hasnt much to do one night so out of boredom or malice cuts the moorings to a boat in order to then to claim to have saved it from the rocks and claim a salvage right/fee. If no one sees the offence or rescue, how would anyone know the salvage was counterfeit or indeed how much danger was involved ?
