Through a remarkable example of serendipity I had Monday and Tuesday of this week booked as annual leave. So two glorious days and nights on the boat - although the early morning temperature was -2.

This morning at 04:00 a duck woke me with it's quacking. It was the only bird, or animal come to that, making any noise at all. It was a single but repeated call and went on and on for at least an hour. It was so cold, (no heating or insulation on my boat), that my semi frozen self concluded it was best to stay in the sleeping bag. I fell asleep again at something after five with the bird still making the noise. Ready for the alarm clock for work at 06:00!

When I got up there were a few ducks and swans in the mist and nothing unusual. But I'm bothered now in case the bird was in distress and I should have got up, caught hypothermia and had a look.

Any experts on duck behaviour here please?

Ducks are bonkers , as are geese.

On the night shift , there are some very strange noises at all hours .....

Herons that sound like Pterodactyls
Suddenly a goose will start honking like it's announcing the end of the world
Ducks quacking loudly and unstoppably for long periods in the dead of night.

I've gone over to the boat rollers at 3 or 4 am when the whole goose colony that overnights there has kicked off , thinking that they are being attacked by a fox , but it's just the geese having a mad five minutes.

All part of the sound of the river. :)

What about the bogey man ? You must have seen him ?

You could not pay me enough to spend the night on that island by myself ...

ONLY a duck; down here we get ducks, large and small, Canadian geese, Egyptian geese (very penetrating call), parakeets and a kingfisher that sounds like a dog whistle.

Worst of all is (an E L Whisty) a tap, tap, tap on the hull - sounds like some one trying to get in....

I went looking for a cheap little diesel sports cruiser but the one I found (with a new engine and teak effect bathing platform and bowthruster) looked like she needed a good polish.... ;)

Just try tapping on No Regrets.

That oven would be on Mk6 before the little bustards (sic) even started quacking on about how tasty they might be :p
