Duck punt build - days 3 and four

going to start simple

Not for me it aint. One halyard and a captive downhaul. Nothing to lose. Fewer loose ends and only one adjustment ........ on the halyard.

I am going to start with the rig as simp as possible and then add the tweaks later

first coat of paint in the morning

second coat thursday

ready for christmas day launch if I can get a rig sorted

for some reason my wife seems keener of covering the sofa than making a sail

but with any luck the oppi rig will turn up soon

Oppi rig? How lazy is that?

3 bits of wood, a few bits of string and you could have a proper rig.

Where is your sense of tradition?

I agree

but my guess is that the oppi rig will be more efficient when going to windward

although I might be wrong

my plan is to start with the oppy rig - if it gets here- and then apply pressure for a bit of sewing machine input

Efficient? What do you care? The quicker you get there the less time to enjoy on the water.

If you really want to go to windward cleat off the mainsheet and paddle on the leeward side.

I am sure....

I am sure you are correct

but there are times when you want to fetch around a corner

we shall see

mast made tonight - rounding off a bit of square timber

Keep it easy...

I'd argue that it's worth sticking with what works. The Duck Punts were designed around an Oppi rig, and they clearly work well.

Change the rig, and you don't really have a Duck Punt, but something a little different and that might prevent you racing, if you wanted to, and making up a sail and rig is just so much work. That's not to say there aren't some good things about the balanced lug I think you're considering - including nice, easy gybing and good performance, if the sail's a good size and cut well.

But as there are lots of good Oppie sails and spars around that have been cast off by Optimist racers, that's what I try first.

Transport appeal

I'm trying to get a rig delivered to Dylan, but couriers either want £140 or won't accept long parcels at present.
If anyone is travelling from Essex to Dylan's area and could transport 2.5m x 100mm dia. could they help please?
