Just been watching the Mythbusters duck tape special: I think that a roll or ten of duck tape should be compulsory on any boat!!!

There is cheap and quite nasty duct tape, which you tend to find in the B&Qs of this world, but I would highly recommend that you try a roll of closure plate tape that we use on gas fire closures (available from Builder/plumbers mechants etc). Its grey and looks like duct tape, but its better than anything else I have found so far.

It may be that there are higher grades of duct tape than I have encountered, but it worth trying some closure tape if your experience is similar to mine.

Dut tape / tank tape

Marvelous stuff. In my experience, most racing cars are held together with it. Though for reasons unknown, we used to call it tank tape.

As a one-time white water touring canoeist, a roll of duct tape is essential equipment. ususally with a bit of meths & matches in candle wax. Wipe damage dry-ish, rinse with meths & light to clean & dry it off, then tape it up for a good waterproof result. - would last at least until end of day, if not trip.

Another good one is the greased, foil-backed flashing tape. No need to do more than wipe off the mud before slapping that on.

I put some on my Avon where the "corner" tapes underneath were getting a bit frayed but the grey part soon peeled off leaving the glue. It was the cheapo sort from In-Excess. Is there a better make that would do the job? It looked quite good to begin with.

I used to work in the entertainments industry (stage lighting before someone gets the wrong idea) we used duct tape a lot, although we called it gaffa tape.

We had a saying that gaffa tape is like the force, it has a dark side, a light side and it holds the universe together.

A long time ago when I was in the RN we had a black version which was good enough top hold grey war canoes together. Known as Black Maskers it was then like god dust.

The then Mrs Maxi, worked for Johnston and Johnston in quality control and tested the stuff

Haven't seen it for a while, but when I was at sea we used to use lots of "Denso tape" for sealing leaks etc; different product completely to duck tape, but stuck like sh** to a blanket!!

Denso tape has it's uses. Mostly in plumbing. It's nasty, slimy stuff that gets greasy gunk everywhere. And wouldn't find much use on most boats. Having said that, I use it to seal the deck around the mast.:D
