Further to my recent post.

I eventually got hold of Dubarry's number in Ireland (seems to be some sort of a secret) and they will resole and reline a pair of Ultima boots for £45 (inc return postage) and a pair of deck shoes for £20.

So problem solved?

I phoned them about six months ago, and complained bitterly that all the boots are the same width. Yes they now make one suitable for wider legs but the actual foot fit is the same as the normal version.

I have a wide foot and just cannot find a pair of boots suitable for my feet.

I like a wide fitting. Bought some Quayside boots at LBS for £79 (half the cost of Dubarrys). Very comfortable. Only complaint is that scuffs on the toe take the surface off which polish does not return to the same as the rest of the boot. Not wearing them for a wedding so happy enough. Comfort is king.

Perhaps you could post the number, mine are about worn out but I can't afford a new pair.

I hope you get a good result.

I've phoned them a couple of times, one to find a stockist, which they couldn't help me with- they directed me to walking and shooting shops for marine boots!!

The second call was to enquire about a Sailing Today review of the Fastnet boots, which the reviewer said had a very painful internal label which chafed him raw on one trip. All I wanted to know was,
1. Can the label be removed, without damage to the gaiter, or
2 Had they done something about it.

The person knew nothing of the review and was, to put it bluntly, downright rude at my temerity at asking such a thing.

Not at all impressed with their attitude so far- please report back your experience, in due course

Don't doubt what you say, but my own experience was diametrically the opposite. They couldn't have been more helpful, both over the phone and by email.

I've had my boots resoled and heeled, and wouldn't hesitate to deal with them again.

Re the earlier comments, I have wide-ish feet (G fitting?), but have had no problem. Mme Sgeir however has had the opposite experience - she's been unable to find a pair that fits, as the fitting is too wide for her.

I've had the same experience as MoodySabre. I've got very wide feet, and found the Quayside boots more than wide enough. My only slight niggle is the loose sole inside, but otherwise they've been great so far (4 years); very good value, waterproof and breathable. I polish them once each winter, and they look more than good enough for the purpose.

Here's a smile for you:

we were in Haslar Marina when a Sunsail training boat came in. The skipper did not seem to be a very good one, as all he was doing was screaming at the novice crew rather than having quietly explained each of their roles before getting close to the dock.
He crunched the bow quite severely whilst docking, then carried on screaming at the students that it was their fault and they were all liable for damages. A couple of them debarked onto the pontoon, looking fairly shocked and traumatised by the day's experiences. We were in the process of pointing out to them that if the instructor was any good he would have apprised them of what to do in good time and not have shouted late instructions.

Then the instructor jumped off the boat, in his Dubarry boots, WITH SPURS ATTACHED.

I kid you not.......
