Dubai on Thames

Last month Boris wanted to build a new airport on Maplin Sands. last week they got permission to build the largest container port in Europe at Thurrock. Now they want to build islands and a marina - hooray at last an alternative to Queenborough /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As for attaching an island to Southend pier - well the only pleasure in being at the end of the pier is to be in the middle of the water. Mind you it might hold the pier up a bit longer but doing away with a channel will increase the chances of it being hit by another boat! Bonkers unlimited - the dafter the idea the bigger the headline.

"Architects believe the islands would also help to protect London from tidal surges, which could become a greater danger if sea levels rise."

So how high are they going to have to build these islands in order to make them safe from the potential sea level rises which are being partially used to justify their creation?

I'd like to know which is the bit of nonsense - because one is. First we have the EA saying that opening the sea wall at Old Hall Marshes (between Mersea Island and Tollesbury) protects the coast against tidal surges - because it gives extra space for the sea to 'use', or, you build a massive artificial island in the Thames Estuary that restricts the space for the tide. One of these is clear nonsense. Now let's see. Twice a day the sun and moon send a load of water down the North Sea to meet the load of water coming up the channel. Umm, the sun and moon send the water no matter what space there is (much less since the Dutch did the Delta Plan). So if water gets squeezed it piles higher (see the Bristol Channel for evidence).

My conclusion, this is criminal lunacy.

Probably start next year but to compensate for the loss of space to this job creation scheme, the EA will announce that it will increase the opening of sea walls from the Wash to Kent!

Didn't Alas Smith and Jones have a phrase for this? What was it? Oh yes, "Excuse me but isn't that b******ks".
