Over the last week I've received several bits of news at work which may seriously affect some of you!
VOSA have notified us - MOT Station - that there is going to be a re-classification of some dual purpose vehicles next year. I'm not going to go into exactly what does or does not constitute a dual purpose vehicle here, but basically if your 4x4 king cab pick-up (or lots of Land Rover variants) GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) on the vehicle plate exceeds 3000kg then after the change date the vehicle will be reclassified as a goods vehicle. That simple change has various ramifications.
1. It will make the vehicle a Class 7 - which not all MOT Testing Stations can test. The Class 7 fee is more than a Class 4.
2. If you tow a trailer with a maximum permissable weight which, when added to the GVM of the towing vehicle exceeds 3500kg then the towing vehicle will require a Tachograph.
3. Depending on when you passed your driving test, you may no longer be allowed to drive it without passing a further test. You must have Category C1+E on your license.
Point 2 was brought home to us today. One of our trade associations (we are also in the Breakdown and Recovery business) has notified us of the recent successful prosecution of several drivers who were driving vehicles which fell into this category and were not fitted with a tachograph. When the Police are notified of the change in classification of dual purpose vehicles they will be on the hunt.
Check out if you will be affected.
Be careful out there!
