DSC radio connection to GIS

I never managed to get my new radio connected but am thinking of having another go.
The radio is a neptune and I think I tried every setting available.
I just read (somewhere!) that the common negative lead has to share that of the other device ( rather than just going to ships negative ) could that have been my problem.
If you say yes then I may have another go at it!

yes the signal ground cable has to be joined separately to the ships ground or other devices ground.
