I own a Monterey 250 single engine cruiser and am looking at going on holiday where we have been offered a mooring which drys out. I have no idea about whether my boat would be OK on sich a mooring. Any help?

Rgds

Hi, own doral 250, similar to yours, its on a swinging mooring which dries out on springs etc, no problems with drying out.. mind you lift your leg up though!!! enjoy..

I'd make sure that when the leg is "up" the skeg is above the bottom of the hull. Ours isn't and so we have to dig a hole in the seabed in order to accommodate it.
Furthermore we've just had to do a major repair on the trim rams as the rods were scored - due apparently to leaving the boat with the leg trimmed "up". I'm led to believe that this is only a Volvo failing so it may not affect you & the OP.

They don't recommend you leave any leg up either in or our of the water. With mercruiser on a trailer, the leg needs to be stored down, because the exhaust and shift cable bellows will prematurely deteriorate, resulting in water ingress.

Its a bit of a dilema, are the boats moored in fresh/brackish or sea water? When the boats dry, are they on mud or sand?

With the rams fully exposed in up tilt for a prolonged period, there is a risk of damage to the seals, because of marine growth. Of course less likely in fresh/brackish.

You need more advice from local boaters and mechanics like Spannerman.

Good luck. I'll be keen to see the feedback.

What's the bottom like???

I have a 25ft Bayliner so very similar to yours and it dries out every day on its mooring. It dries into very soft mud so sits upright and stable. If you are drying onto hard sand, the boat will lie one way of the other so won't be very comfortable to be on at low water. If you are drying alongside a pontoon or wall you need to fender well to take the weight of the boat laying against the pontoon or wall.

Hi,

We've also got a Monterey 250, as long as you lift your leg you'll be fine to dry out, would suggest giving the water intake a quick scrub with a brush before starting just to make sure nothing is blocking it!

Hope you have a good trip, went down in my last boat a Monterey 218 and had a great time.. unfortunately the weather gods weren't kind when we tried to go in the 250 /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
