I’ve just replaced the water pump seals on my 1GM10 and am ready to start the engine. However I’m concerned because the raw water system is now empty and the possibility of impeller damage.

Thanks, I did apply a thin coat of silicone grease to the inside of the pump. I’m a little concerned as the new water side seal is fairly tight on the shaft.

Water is a poorer lubricant than silicone grease so if you have concerns about starting the engine with a well-greased pump then I can't see how you are ever going to be able to start it at all.

It's always a good idea to prime the pump before starting. They do self prime most of the time anyway, but that initial slug of coolant doesn't hurt any.

All good in the end. Flushed out and cleaned the strainer and the pump functioned perfectly.
I worked out that the feed is just below the waterline.
Thanks to those who made positive suggestions.
